Singer Akon Was Barred From Entering Kuwait To Perform A Gig There On Saturday (11apr15) Amid Concerns Over His Racy Lyrics.
The Smack That hitmaker was forced to cancel the show after local officials in the conservative Muslim country reportedly voiced objections about the content of his songs.
Member of Parliament Humood Al Hamdan told Kuwait newspaper Al Rai, "If the U.S. singer who is well known for his terrible lyrics is allowed to perform, we will not hesitate to move against anything that touches our religion and our morals. We need to protect our children and make sure they are not influenced by negative people. There must be a zero-tolerance policy towards such matters."
However, Bashar Al Sayegh, the secretary general of political group the National Coalition, slammed the decision.
He says, "The information ministry allowed the concert, the interior ministry supported it and the youth ministry sponsored it. Then, the interior ministry cancels it under pressure from lawmakers. The government should not have given in to the forces that have caused an ominous deterioration of freedom."
One of the concert's organisers, Reema Al Yacoub, confirmed that authorities called off the show late last week (ends12Apr15) but did not give a clear explanation.
