The 'New Girl' actress is in final negotiations to join the cast of the low-budget comedy, being directed by Richard Curtis.
The film tells the tale of a family of time travellers who, when their son Tim grows up, decide to tell him about their secret powers.
Zooey will play Tim's love interest Mary, with her likely to shoot the project in the summer between the seasons of 'New Girl'.
The 32-year-old beauty - who is also a singer and a model - has had a number of roles in films in the last few years, including the part of Summer Finn in '(500) Days of Summer' and 'Your Highness' alongside James Franco and Natalie Portman.
