Why Him? Review

Good

Writer-director John Hamburg continues to recycle the formula that made his first hit Meet the Parents so wildly popular, as this comedy pits two very different men against each other. And while it's never terribly clever, at least James Franco and Bryan Cranston are imaginatively cast as opposite forces. So audiences in search of escapism will find plenty to chuckle at as things spiral ludicrously out of control.

Cranston plays Ned, who travels with his wife Barb (the fabulous Megan Mullally) and teen son Scotty (Griffin Gluck) to Silicon Valley to spend the holidays with older daughter Steph (Zooey Deutch) and meet her boyfriend Laird (Franco). What they don't know is that Laird is an internet millionaire with absolutely no filter in how he interacts with people. Almost everything he says is inappropriate, and yet it's so honest that it's disarming. Still, Ned and Barb aren't too happy that their daughter is so serious about dating this guy. And with the help of his sidekick Gustav (Keegan-Michael Key), Laird goes completely over-the-top to impress them.

Much of the humour is of the gross-out variety, with the main running gag centring on an actual toilet. But at least the jokes aren't about embarrassment this time; they're about the clash between people who prefer to keep their true feelings bottled up inside and someone who can't help but be real, despite the fact that he shocks everyone he meets. This makes each person a little more complex than expected, and gives the actors some texture to work with, even though the script never bothers to even crack the surface. And while Cranston and Franco have more obvious comedy set-pieces to contend with, the film is stolen by Mullally and Key in roles that are more subtly hilarious and broadly amusing, respectively.

Before I Fall Trailer

Samantha Kingston has, to many people, a great life. She has a perfect family and is one of the most popular girls in school. When she wakes up on February 12th, it just seems like a regular Friday. Her best friends will pick her up, they'll go to school and end the day with another epic house party. Unfortunately, that day ends at the same time as her life when they are involved in a road accident. She wakes up in her bed, to her surprise, but discovers that it's Friday morning again. Confused, she spends the rest of the day in a daze of deja vu, but when she finds herself dying and waking up again, she knows something's wrong with her.

No matter how hard she tries to change things throughout the day, she still wakes up on the same day after the same night. Soon she starts to think that maybe her plight is something to do with a strange girl at her school named Juliet Sykes; a loner and a freak, at least in her and her friends' eyes, who they never stop making fun of. It's only when she starts to feel bad about how they're treating Juliet that she finally accepts that if she has to live this day over and over, she wants to be the best person she can be every time.

Based on the best-selling 2010 young adult novel of the same name by Lauren Oliver, 'Before I Fall' follows very much in the vein of 'Groundhog Day' and 'Edge of Tomorrow', but in a high school setting. It has been directed by Ry Russo-Young ('Nobody Walks') with a screenplay by Maria Maggenti ('Monte Carlo') and Gina Prince-Bythewood ('The Secret Life of Bees') and is set to be released in theatres on March 3rd 2017.

Everybody Wants Some!! Review

Excellent

Richard Linklater loosely follows on from two of his most acclaimed films with this lively university comedy set in 1980. It's billed as a "spiritual sequel" to his high school classic Dazed and Confused, which was set in the late 1970s. And it also represents an exploration of the next stage in the life of the central character from Boyhood. But even without those connections, the film is a fresh, funny, involving look at how young people react to that first flush of freedom.

It opens as Jake (Glee's Blake Jenner) arrives at his Texas university three days before classes start. He moves into a house with the rest of the baseball team, who immediately start tormenting him as the newbie. The alpha male is the swaggering star player McReynolds (Tyler Hoechlin), usually accompanied by his good-time sidekick Finn (Glen Powell). Over this raucous weekend, Jake navigates the rules of the house, including pranks, macho posturing, initiation rites, excessive alcohol and even a baseball practice session. There are also, of course, a series of colourful parties. And along the way he makes a connection with sexy theatre student Beverly (Zoey Deutch).

The film is packed with memorable characters, and the charming Jake is a terrific entry point for the audience. Jenner plays him as a smart, nice guy who isn't afraid to stand up to both the chucklehead jocks and the idiotic party boys. All of these guys are hilariously entertaining as they jostle for position in the house. The standout is Powell's talkative Finn, who is smarter than he looks. And Wyatt Russell has terrific presence as a woolly stoner with a secret. It's a lot of fun to watch the interaction between these guys, who are all in their late teens or early 20s, flexing their newfound independence by obsessing about drinking, drugs and sex.

Dirty Grandpa Review

Good

There's nothing clever about this deliberately rude and vulgar comedy, but certain audiences will find it absolutely hilarious. Never afraid to head straight into the cheapest, nastiest gag, director Dan Mazar and writer John Phillips throw their odd-couple stars into a series of riotously awkward situations, usually involving nudity. And even if it's not as funny as it ought to be, at least there's some meaning to the chaos.

Zac Efron plays Jason, a bright young Atlanta lawyer who takes after his workaholic father (Dermot Mulroney). But Jason's grandfather Dick (Robert De Niro) remembers a more interesting Jason, before ruthless ambition took over his life. So after Grandma's funeral, Dick asks Jason to drive him down to Florida a week before Jason is due to marry the high-maintenance Meredith (Julianne Hough). Jason quickly discovers that Grandpa is intent on sowing some very wild oats, detouring their journey through Daytona at spring break, where they meet a couple of girls (Aubrey Plaza and Zoey Deutch) who are up for pretty much anything. What Jason doesn't know is that Grandpa is doing all of this to remind Jason who he really is, and to show him how to enjoy life instead of control it.

The script sometimes lays on this message rather thickly in between a series of deliberately jaw-dropping gross-out sequences. Predictably, drugs and sex abound, and most of the jokes are so corny and ludicrous that they're not remotely believable. Everything that happens strains to shock the audience, which means that nothing is actually very shocking. But while the story has no tension at all, it also manages to grab hold of the audience simply because the characters are so vividly played by the fearless Efron and De Niro. Neither role is much of a stretch, but they dive into even the yucky and/or naked moments with gusto, developing some chemistry in the process.

Dirty Grandpa Trailer

Dick Kelly has never been able to unwind, he's a retired army general and even though he has a foul-mouth, he lives a rather subdued life - well, far more subdued than he's like. After being given a new lease of life, Dick convinces his grandson to take him away, what Jason doesn't realise is Dick is planning a wild weekend at Daytona beach. The only problem with this is Jason is one week away from getting married to his bosses daughter and is perhaps one of the most unlikely people to ever visit somewhere like Daytona Beach.

On the way Dick and Jason make a few new friends. Dick is desperate to sow his wild oats whilst all Jason can think about is getting the trip over and done with. Jason despondently remarks that most grandads would be happy with 'toffee and socks' - alas not Dick.

Dirty Grandpa was directed by Dan Mazer who produced many of Sacha Baron Cohen's movies including Bruno, Borat and The Dictator. Mazer is also set to direct upcoming movie The Flash starring Ezrz Miller.

Beautiful Creatures Trailer

Lena Duchannes is a Caster whose family has plenty of dark power between them, but rather than feeling empowered, Lena just wishes she can be mortal so she wouldn't have to hide and people wouldn't talk about her all the time. When she moves to the small and somewhat conservative town of Gatlin, South Carolina, she finds herself an outcast but is soon noticed by her school mate Ethan Wate who is enchanted by her and the excitement her arrival brings to this ordinary, unmoving town. However, their relationship is compromised by the fact that Lena only has a matter of days left before she is subjected to the Claiming; a process that will decide whether she will turn to the Light or the Dark side of magic. While her uncle does everything in her power to make sure she is claimed to the Light, the all-powerful Sarafine is convinced that she will have great magical supremacy which would better be served in the Dark.

'Beautiful Creatures' is the story of just how much love can conquer and, equally, the devastation it brings. It has been adapted to screen by Oscar nominated director and screenwriter Richard LaGravenese ('P.S. I Love You', 'The Mirror Has Two Faces') from the book of the same name by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. The fantasy romance will be released in time for Valentine's Day on February 13th 2013.

Director: Richard LaGravenese
