Zoe Ball looks set to join old friend Chris Evans as a co-host on the new series of ‘Top Gear’. The 44 year old is being touted as producer's first choice to join the show, becoming the series’ first ever female presenter.

A source told The Mirror, “Zoe looks like a certainty after the screen tests. She was brilliant down on the race track and she’s enthusiastic about cars.”

“She’s a complete professional and of course has a long history of working with the BBC on radio and television so she has known Chris a long time. Things immediately clicked into place and there was a lightbulb moment among producers.”

“The chemistry between Zoe and Chris is perfect,” the source added. Zoe and Chris have been friends since the 1990s and have both presented Channel 4’s 'Big Breakfast' and hosted Radio 1 and 2 breakfast shows.

Producers of the show are said to be keen to find a female presenter to join the team. But last month early frontrunner, model Jodie Kidd, dropped out of the race, giving Zoe her backing.

Other names said to be in consideration to join the revamped show are Motorbike racer Guy Martin, actor Philip Glenister and former ‘X-Factor’ presenter Dermot O’Leary

'Top Gear' was originally expected to come back to our screens next March but a BBC spokesman has since said they are not working to a timeframe. Meanwhile ‘Top Gear’s’ original presenters, Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond. will be debuting their new motoring show on Amazon next autumn.
