Zach Galifianakis' new movie 'The Hangover Part II' grossed $86 million over the Memorial Day weekend, smashing the record for the biggest opening of a live-action comedy, reports MTV News. Zach Galifianakis stars alongside Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms in the sequel to the surprise 2006 blockbuster.
Audiences flocked to see Galifiankais and co in the highly-anticipated new movie, which contains similar themes to the much-loved first film but swaps Las Vegas for Thailand. Before starting work on the sequel, writer and director Todd Phillips had said, "I love The Hangover so much and I think we could crush it with the sequel". After a huge opening weekend, the movie sits just behind 'The Matrix Reloaded' on a list of the biggest ever R-rated openings. Another sequel featuring Galifianakis, 'Kung Fu Panda 2', grossed around $47.8 million at the box-office. The animated movie gained mainly positive reviews while 'The Hangover Part II' received less then complimentary feedback from critics. Elsewhere during a busy Memorial Day weekend, Johnny Depp's 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' took its overall box-office total to $153.1 million, while 'Thor' took in a further $9.4 million to record an overall total of $159.7 million. Woody Allen's 'Midnight in Paris' managed to enter the top 10 despite only playing in 52 locations.
Zach Galifianakis, now considered one of Hollywood's most bankable comedy actors, is currently filming 'Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie', with Will Ferrell and Erica Durance. The film follows the story of two friends who receive a billion dollars to make their own movie.
