Yoko Ono marked what would have been her late husband John Lennon's 71st birthday by performing her annual ritual of switching on a beacon of light at the Imagine Peace Tower in Iceland.
The Beatles legend would have celebrated the milestone on Sunday (09Oct11), the same day his bandmate Sir Paul MCCartney married Nancy Shevell in London.
But instead of attending the nuptials, Ono travelled to Vioey Island, near Reykjavik, where she turned on a beam of light at the tower named after Lennon's most famous solo track Imagine.
Ono said in a statement, "I hope the Imagine Peace Tower will give light to the strong wishes of world peace from all corners of the planet and give encouragement, inspiration and a sense of solidarity in a world now filled with fear and confusion. Let us come together to realise a peaceful world."
Ono launched the memorial in 2007 and has been lighting the beam every year on Lennon's birthday ever since.
