Yeah Yeah Yeahs (formed 2000)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs is a New York art-rock band. The line-up consists of Karen O - singer, Brian Chase - drummer and Nick Zinner - guitarist. In 2006 they were joined by an additional live guitarist, Imaad Wasif.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Early Days
In the late 1990s, Brian Chase and Karen O met at Oberlin College in Ohio. When Karen transferred to New York University, she met Nick Zinner in a bar. Karen and Nick formed a band called Unitard and when the original drummer left, Chase joined the band and they changed their name to Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Their sound is reportedly based on the student bands that Karen and Brian had left behind in Ohio.
In their early days, Yeah Yeah Yeahs supported bands such as the White Stripes and The Strokes and soon earned a name for themselves on the underground New York garage punk revival scene.
The band's debut EP was recorded by Jerry Teel of Boss Hog and released on their own label, Shifty. In the UK, the EP was released by Wichita Records, home of The Cribs and Bloc Party. In the US, it was re-released by Touch and Go Records.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Debut Album Onwards
Yeah Yeah Yeahs' debut album was entitled Fever To Tell and was released in 2003. The lead single 'Maps' received widespread airplay and the video for its follow-up, 'Y Control' was directed by Spike Jonze.
The band's debut DVD release was called Tell Me What Rockers To Swallow. It contained a live performance filmed in San Francisco's the Fillmore venue as well as all of the band's music videos.
Show Your Bones, the band's second album, was released in 2006. The debut single from the album, 'Gold Lion' went to number 18 in the UK Singles Chart. Later that year, Yeah Yeah Yeahs helped to curate an All Tomorrow's Parties festival in Britain.
2007 saw Yeah Yeah Yeahs release the Is Is EP.
It's Blitz is Yeah Yeah Yeahs' third album, released in March 2009 and the lead single from the album was 'Zero'. The album was leaked on the internet prior to its official release so Interscope Records brought its release forward.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Collaborations
Karen and Nick both make a guest appearance on the album Bang Bang Boom Cake, by Tiny Masters of Today.
Karen O worked with Kool Keith on a track called 'Teaser', though the track never got an official release. She also recorded a track with Peaches and Johnny Knoxville for the soundtrack to Jackass II. In 2007, she recorded vocals for a cover of Bob Dylan's 'Highway 61 Revisited' for the soundtrack to I'm Not There.
Having finally finished touring last year's 'Mosquito' album, the group's singer reveals that they're taking a break.
It might be a while before we hear some new material from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, as the band is reportedly “on a bit of a hiatus”.
The group’s iconic lead singer Karen O spoke to NME magazine for its Christmas edition, and said about the hiatus: “We have to wait to get the urge, get that itch. The time needs to be right and we're OK waiting for that, I think.” When the group does start recording, she believes “it'll be like muscle memory, this unspoken thing between the three of us where it all just… locks in.”

Less-is-more new single from Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer and Oscar nominee
Not many artists have their break-out year after more than a decade in the spotlight. So far 2014 has been shaping up to be pretty great for Karen O - the singer from New York art rockers the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Following widescreen acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for the gorgeous ‘The Moon Song’ - Karen O's contribution to the Spike Jonze film ‘Her’ - the singer/songwriter announced plans to release Crush Songs - her debut solo album outside of the band.
Monday (28 July) saw the premiere of ’Rapt,’ the disarming first single from her upcoming record on Lauren Laverne’s BBC 6 Music radio show. The singer has also released an accompanying music video - shot by husband and director Barnaby Clay - showing the singer submerged underwater in a red dress.

The inimitable frontwoman is going solo for a brand new album.
Karen O has announced that she'll be releasing her first album of solo recorded material this autumn. Titled Crush Songs, the record will apparently touch on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman's experiences in love and will be released via Julian Casablancas' record label.
Karen has recently made an impact with her solo singing projects, having been nominated for an Oscar for her Her soundtrack song, 'The Moon Song.' The success of her Spike Jonze movie track as well as the strong reception she received performing it live at this year's Academy Awards has probably boosted the 35 year-old singer's solo confidence.
The singer-songwriter revealed the news via her website where she also provided a glimpse at the album's cover art as well as a written explanation of her motives behind Crush Songs. "Uhm when I was 27 I crushed a lot," she writes.

FYF Fest 2013 presents yet more new acts for its 10th annual weekend this August including comedians Doug Benson, Brett Gelman and Karen Kilgariff.

The MTV Video Music Awards have been announced, with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Justin Timberlake sharing six nods.
The nominations for the MTV Video Music Awards 2013 have been announced, with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Justin Timberlake leading the field. Armed with their videos for 'Can't Hold Us' and 'Thrift Shop,' the hip-hop duo will square off against JT at Brooklyn's Barclays Center on August 25, 2013.
Both acts received six nominations, with Timberlake getting nods for his 'Suit and Tie' and 'Mirrors' promos. Elsewhere, Bruno Mars appears to have every chance of taking home the prize of 'Video of the Year' with 'Locked out of Heaven,' though Robin Thicke's controversial clip for 'Blurred Lines' and Taylor Swift's 'I Knew You Were Trouble' will also be popular.
The VMAs - one of the biggest events on the pop music calendar - represents the first time a major awards show has been held in Brooklyn. The place has been a mecca for art and culture for years, though the Barclays Center appears to have truly put it on the map.

Are you ready to rock, Scotland? T in the Park ready to kick off a weekend of musical wonderment but not without a heavy police presence to cut drug use.
The sun is shining, the line-up is terrific; T In The Park 2013 is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary with thousands of fans and seven stages. Performers during the three day festival will include Mumford & Sons, Rihanna, The Killers, Ke$ha, Kendrick Lamar, Emeli Sandé, The Proclaimers, and many more massive mainstream names. The recently revived German electronic pioneers Kraftwerk will also be making their festival debut in a hotly anticipated set that is rumoured to include 3D visuals, as well as My Bloody Valentine.
Kraftwerk To Bring Their Machine-Like Electronica To T In The Park.
T must surely rival similarly huge English festivals Glastonbury and Download for the strongest line-up of the year, with Mercury Prize winning Alt-J, New York's Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Frank Ocean, Paloma Faith and Icelandic newcomers Of Monsters and Men also playing across the weekend to celebrate two decades of the Scottish event. Festival director Geoff Ellis said, according to BBC's Newsbeat, "It doesn't feel like 20 years since we started and it's a milestone." The festival, which has been held annually since 1994 has been held at Balado airfield in Kinross-shire since 1997 and now attracts 85,000 fans and 35,000 campers to the second largest greenfield event in the UK.

Albums of Note... Yeah Yeah Yeahs have returned after a lengthy break, with Mosquito. It’s a marked step in the band’s evolution and a further step away from their punky roots. Mosquito has opened up further avenues of creative possibilities for a band that once seemed shackled by their arty roots and somewhat more importantly, Karen O now has blonde hair, now folks. That’s the big news here.
“The possibilities for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs now seem endless. The inclusion of Kool Keith's alter ego Dr Octagon on 'Buried Alive' is one such example. Although slightly scattergun in its approach, Mosquito almost feels like a record the band needed to make to reach the next stage of their evolution.”
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are evolving and quickly. New album Mosquito may well be the clearest sign yet that their scrappy New York Punk roots were merely one incarnation of this versatile three-piece. Karen O seems to have paid her debt to the likes of PJ Harvey in full. She's no longer a primal force of nature, having morphed into something far more refined and seductive. Just like the tiny insect that held the key to Jurassic Park, Mosquito opens the door to all sorts of possibilities for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
It's by no means a perfect record, although it starts promisingly enough with the raunchy biblical overtones of the funky gospel number 'Sacrilege'. "Fallen for a guy, fell down from the sky"; Karen O sings before the track cranks up the volume to a full handclapping conclusion complete with a choir. It's infectious and fun and picks up where previous record, It's Blitz!, left off. But it's also not indicative of Mosquito's true nature.
That honour goes to the far more sedate and dark 'Subway', which slows the pace of the record to a crawl. While the train noises, which are used as a percussive heartbeat to the track, are a welcome addition, it takes its time to make an impact. Seemingly concerned more with the hypnotic possibilities of the vocal which is intertwined with the instruments, there's a subterranean sense of cool that oozes through your speakers. It's a trick that's repeated on the Dub inspired 'Under The Earth' and again on 'Always'. But ignoring the sudden gear changes, these experiments in sound also lack a sense of immediacy and urgency that have defined much of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs previous work.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs vocalist Karen O (formally Karen Orzolek) shows up outside the New York studios for 'The Late Show With David Letterman'. She signs an autograph for a fan before rushing towards the door to the building. She stops to wave at a photographer who asks for a picture.
Albums of Note... It’s been a long two years since James Blake released his debut eponymous album and now, the pioneering producer returns with Overgrown, album number two. Peppered with quality collaborations, with hip-hop legend RZA and electronic music’s figurehead Brian Eno, Overgrown is the sound of an artist still trying to find his niche, but releasing high quality, accomplished tracks, whilst he’s on his journey. “Blake really is a talent to behold, as his ingenious moulding together of poles apart genres and production wizardry clearly shows… when you're already as accomplished at all manner of musical exercises as he is then it will obviously be hard to focus all this talent and all this energy into one place.”
Splitting opinion like musical Marmite, John Grant returns with Pale Green Ghosts. This album may sound unrecognisable as Grant, to anyone already familiar with his work. He’s hooked up with Gus Gus’ Biggi Viera and has decamped to Reykjavik. As a result, a new reliance on vintage-sounding synthesisers and a nod to club-land has John Grant sounding like an altogether different proposition to the John Grant of days gone by.“Grant's dyspeptic edge may be blunted, but when called upon the man can make a fine ass post-modern disco song, like we ever doubted that he could, and Blackbelt is a tweaked remix away from the transient world of A Lists, charts and chat shows. Cleverly poignant, its way with knock out disses would give Jake Shears something to think about if it proved to be a permanent change of direction…”
Lily Cole stars in the dark new video from New York rockers the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, with the song 'Sacrilege'
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs aren't really a band known for their exploits of the music video, but with their new single 'Sacrilege' the New Yorkers have pulled out all the stops for a bizarre, slightly disturbing story-telling video about the evils of promiscuity in a small, Christian town in rural America.
Food and music extravaganza returns in May
The Great GoogaMooga will be returning this year to Prospect Park in Brooklyn New York, with another heavyweight line-up of food and music assured.
Among those announced for the music section of the festival include The Flaming Lips, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Darkness, Matt & Kim and De La Soul. The Flaming Lips return next week with their new album The Terror, arguably their greatest work to date though perhaps also their bleakest, which means there’ll be some anticipation as to how they approach their set. Usually a colorful celebratory shower, which sees confetti guns go off and Wayne Coyne, their front man walk out into the crowd inside a giant balloon, these bleak new tracks won’t really fit with that aesthetic. Thankfully the boisterous punk group Yeah Yeah Yeahs will add some cheer to proceedings, as will preposterous metallers The Darkness, while you can always rely on De La Soul to get the good vibes going.
As for the food vendors, The NY Eater reports that the line-up will feature teams from over 85 restaurants, including Gwynnett St., Eataly, M. Wells, Maison Premiere, Momofuku Milk Bar, Roberta's, Rosemary's, and Umami Burger. The Nomad, PDT, and Pouring Ribbons are apparently going to serve drinks as a part of the "VIP Cocktail experience," and the beverage tents will offer over 75 beers and over 100 wines. The event takes place on the weekend of May 17th.
