The Mexican actors and best pals have signed on to lead the cast in Casa de mi padre, a dramatic telenova-style comedy featuring English subtitles, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Plot details have yet to be released, however, producers have revealed Luna will play Ferrell's brother, and Garcia Bernal will play a family friend. Genesis Rodriguez will play Ferrell's love interest.
The film, directed by Matt Piedmont, is scheduled for release in 2012.

Y Tu Mama Tambien co-stars Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna staged a gala dinner in Mexico City on Saturday night (11Aug07) in an effort to raise funds and awareness about poverty and injustice in the country.
The two actors and friends teamed up with rocker Peter Gabriel's Witness human rights organisation and Mexico's Commission for the Defense and Promotion of Human Rights to stage the $300 (GBP150)-a-head event.
At a press conference before the gala, Bernal congratulated filmmakers for bringing light to terrible acts: "Documentaries show us the injustices in the country where we live, that this problem exists. We can't escape it."
Luna and Garcia Bernal have launched a new production company, Canana, and plan to make a series of documentaries aimed at raising awareness about failures of the Mexican judicial system.
The childhood pals and Y Tu Mama Tambien co-stars want to help Mexican film-makers produce movies without worrying about Hollywood's commercial constraints.
Bernal enthuses, "What we want to do is give the opportunity for directors to put their own point of view.
