Authorities have released the 'mug shot' picture of country music legend Willie Nelson following his arrest for marijuana possession last Friday (26th November 2010), reports the UK's Daily Mail. The image has since surfaced online and depicts a tired looking Nelson with bags under his eyes and his recognisable silver hair resting on his shoulders. The Hudspeth County police's detention report confirms that the singer was sober when he arrested and willingly left with the authorities.
The 77-year-old was arrested at a US Border Patrol checkpoint in Sierra Blanca, Texas, as he travelled from California to Austin for the next leg of his current tour. After border authorities opened the door to his tour bus they reportedly 'smelt cannabis', and resultantly conducted a full search which turned up six ounces of the drug. Nelson confirmed that the substance was indeed his, however, two other men were also arrested.
Following his arrest, Nelson posted $2,500 bail and was released. It is expected that he will now continue the rest of his US tour as normal. A long-time advocate of the legalisation of cannabis, the UK's Guardian newspaper quoted him in 2008 as saying, "It's a matter of time, a matter of education, a matter of people finding out what cannabis, marijuana is for, why it grows out of the ground and why it's prescribed as one of the greatest stress medicines on the planet".
