Super Review

Very Good
Writer-director Gunn gleefully subverts genre expectations with this superhero movie that goes way against the grain. And what makes it worth seeing is the fact that every scene is grounded in reality.

Frank (Wilson) only has two moments in his life when he felt happy: first was his wedding to Sarah (Tyler) and second was when he helped a cop foil a crime.

So when Sarah leaves him for the charismatic criminal Jacques (Bacon), Frank turns to crimefighting, with a little inspiration from Libby (Page), who works in a comic book shop. Frank's super alter-ego is the Crimson Bolt, smacking criminals with a pipe-wrench. And when Libby figures it out, she becomes his sidekick Boltie, helping him launch an all-out offensive to free Sarah from Jacques' control.

Circuit Review

Bad
Maybe as a heterosexual female, the allure of the gay male dance/drug/sex circuit is something I simply cannot fathom. But having grown up, and knowing, my fair share of homosexuals, I doubt Circuit would be that much more appealing to gay men than a brief glimpse of eye candy.

Coupling disgracefully written dialogue with flailing bodily movements that substitute for acting, Circuit is the awkwardly paced soap opera-ish story of John (Jonathan Wade Drahos), the new kid in Hollywood, learning about having fun as a gay man. He was a cop in his home state of Illinois until his boss mentions that nobody wants to work with him due to his lifestyle, has he thought about living elsewhere? Having grown up there, you'd think he'd be smart enough to move to a more comfortable environment anyway without a condescending conversation to provoke him.

Jawbreaker Review

Bad
Try as we will to forget, we all remember middle school. We all remember how much our own life felt like it resembled Welcome to the Dollhouse. We remember the insults. We remember the fights. We remember being the spectator to a catfight.

Watching Jawbreaker, in that respect, could be called a nostalgia film.

Twin Falls Idaho Review

Very Good
The scene from Twin Falls Idaho that you won't forget is the fight between twins Blake and Francis. It's the most disturbing tangle of limbs since Greg "The Hammer" Valentine's patented Figure Four leg-lock in the World Wrestling Federation. Don't be fooled by this tasteless intro, however - the film moves much slower and with infinitely greater grace than the entire history of entertainment wrestling.

This dark, yet gentle love story is about the relationship between Blake and Francis Falls (Mark and Michael Polish), seen through the eyes of Penny (newcomer Michelle Hicks) the hooker. Written, starring, and directed by, The Polish brothers, Twin Falls Idaho captures a wealth of sadness and truth. The plot centers on Blake's struggle to reconcile his affection for Penny with an unshakable dedication to ailing brother Francis. Out of that turmoil comes the film's most poignant scene, as Francis desperately attempts to physically keep his brother from the one thing he knows he will never have - a woman.

Carrie (1976) Review

OK
I might be the only person in the world who thinks Brian DePalma's 1976 classic thriller Carrie (now out on DVD) is one of the most overrated, disappointing horror films of all time, but I stand behind my review, and I swear I can knock down just about any argument its defenders throw. This is my third viewing of the film. Every time I watch it, I find major problems in the story for all the same reasons.

Carrie is the tale of a high school senior named Carrie White, aptly played by Sissy Spacek, who spends her days at school as the center of nearly every cruel ridicule and her hours at home with a constricting, sadistic, fanatically religious mother (Piper Laurie). Let's just say the mother is like a female version of Sergeant Hartman in Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, and Carrie is the distressed Private Pyle.

Twin Falls Idaho Review

Good

Literal and symbolic duplicity are only the simplest of character traits in the people that populate "Twin Falls, Idaho."

So much goes understood yet unspoken in every relationship of this densely cerebral story that as Michael and Mark Polish -- twin brothers and the movie's writers, directors and stars -- were developing the script, they must have boiled it down to its most engrossing base elements between each revision before adding back in only elements necessary to advance the plot, which is about the unique relationship between reclusive conjoined twins.

Opening in an atmosphere that recalls the dark, freak show flavor of David Cronenberg or David Lynch, "Twin Falls" finds its title characters, Blake and Francis Falls, quietly holed up from a gawking world in a seedy New York hotel room (on Idaho Street -- the title has nothing to do with the Northwestern city it's named after). The mood is bizarre as they wait for a hooker, who subsequently runs away when she sees she'd be pulling a rather macabre double duty.
