The Hollywood Film Awards fire the starting pistol on awards season in the movie industry.
British star Carey Mulligan was among the winners at the 19th annual Hollywood Film Awards for her central role as Maud in the new movie Suffragette, a laundry worker who joins the fight for the right for women to vote.
The 30 year old star, who gave birth to her first child with husband Marcus Mumford just a few months ago, won Best Actress at the 2015 edition of the gongs, which are the first major ceremony in a long run of black-tie events leading up to the Academy Awards on February 28th.
The Hollywood Film Awards winners are announced in advance and are not televised, but prominently features movies not on general release and are a reasonable indicator of what will be on offer during awards season.
Set for release next year, the new record will be Smith's first in 11 years, and he's also likely to bring DJ Jazzy Jeff on tour with him.

Is it really wise to trust your most dangerous sworn enemies? Sometimes you have little choice when there are threats in the world too brutal to put your best men on. Amanda Weller is in charge of a top secret government organisation known as A.R.G.U.S. They have in their detainment some of the world's craziest psychopaths, supervillains and powerful mutants, and while they are being of no use to society stuck in prison cells, Weller introduces a brand new team known as the Suicide Squad in which these criminals can carry out seemingly impossible missions with the promise of freedom or, at least, reduced sentences. Among them are such fiends as Harley Quinn, The Joker, Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, Enchantress, Rick Flagg and Killer Croc - who are all willing to band together and save the world, even if they die trying.
Lucky fans in attendance at San Diego's Comic-Con on Saturday got their first look at the much anticipated super-villain movie.
Suicide Squad may have another month of filming left, but that didn't stop the movie’s stars as well as director David Ayer from taking a road trip to Comic Con this weekend, to wet fan’s appetites for the highly anticipated super-villain flick.

Despite the promotional materials already out there, including the pictures of the cast in full costume, the director assures fans that all plot twists are intact.
There’s been quite a number of photos and teasers over the last month or so from the set of Suicide Squad that have been endlessly pored over, but director David Ayer has assured fans that they haven’t given anything away and that there’s still surprises to come.
The Warner Bros.-backed movie wrapped up shooting on the streets of Toronto last week, and the 47 year old director took to Twitter to say that the surprises that the film has in store for fans remain intact, and have not been compromised in any way by the large amount of material already in the public arena.

His father has recently been cast as ‘Deadshot’ in the upcoming Warner Bros project Suicide Squad, and now it looks as if Jaden Smith is set to follow in his footsteps by landing a DC comic books adapation of his own. The 16 year old is rumoured to have been cast as the lead in the forthcoming flick Static Shock, though this has not yet been confirmed.
Actor Tyler James Williams let the rumour slip in a video interview with the blog ‘Flicks and the City’ on YouTube. “There aren’t many young black comic book superheroes,” Williams said when talking about the demographic make-up of blockbuster movies, and added, “it’s great to seeStatic Shock is happening with Jaden.”

The blockbuster sequel has landed another veteran from the original, to go alongside Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman.
He may not have been able to secure the services of Will Smith, but director Roland Emmerich has at least manage to secure the services of Smith’s on-screen wife Vivica A. Fox to reprise her role for the Independence Day sequel.
The director made the announcement via Twitter that Fox would be reappearing as her character Jasmine from the 1996 blockbuster. Fox has enjoyed a revival in her fortunes in the last couple of years, coming off a high-profile performance in the so-bad-that-it’s-good Sharknado 2: The Second One.

The movie star, currently in box office topper 'Focus', has been linked to Scientology in the past, but a former senior executive for the religion denies that he is a member.
Contrary to popular belief, Will Smith is not a Scientologist. That’s according to a former Scientology senior executive in a new interview ahead of the anticipated documentary movie about the controversial religion.
In a conversation with The Daily Beast, former executive director of Scientology’s Office of Special Affairs Mike Rinder and journalist Tony Ortega, who has reported on the religion for almost twenty years, both flatly denied that the blockbuster star was a card-carrying member of the church. “Will Smith is not a Scientologist,” they both plainly stated.

Is Will Smith still a major box-office name?
Focus topped the weekend box-office despite falling a little short of expectations. The Will Smith action-comedy flick took $19.1 million to snatch the No.1 spot away from Fifty Shades of Grey though analysts had predicted the move would earn between $21 million to $23 million.
Will Smith [L] and Margot Robbie [R] in Focus
It led to some debate that Smith's star power was beginning to wane, though Focus received mainly positive reviews and represents a far greater success story than After Earth - the actor's last movie considered one of the worst movie of all time. Focus cost just $50.1 million to produce and should recoup that figure once it expands abroad.

Well, it's not a terrible and it's not amazing, but Focus still managed to top the box office.
The votes are pretty much unanimous - the thing to see this weekend is Focus, an action drama starring Will Smith (of all people). It has singlehandedly ended the reign of Fifty Shades of Grey and topped the box office with a $19.1 million.

Even so, this still counts as one of the worst opening weekends of Will Smith's career and a pretty slow start for the March box office overall. The Warner Bros. movie, co-starring up-and-coming actress Margot Robbie, did topple Fifty Shades of Grey, which had placed No. 1 for two consecutive weekends. On the subject of toppling Fifty Shades, Kingsman: The Secret Service also pulled ahead of the R-rated romance this weekend.

Smith is back and yes it’s better than ‘After Earth’.
If you’d been wondering what it would take to knock Fifty Shades Of Grey off the top of the US box office, it turns out the answer was Will Smith. Smith returned to the big screen this weekend in con-man comedy Focus, which managed to steal the No. 1 spot from Fifty Shades which had been dominating theatres since its Valentine’s release’
The comedy, which co-stars Margot Robbie now looks set to take around $20 by the end of the weekend, according to the Hollywood Reporter, after pulling in $6.4 million on its opening Friday. The film is something of a return to form for Smith who suffered a career blow when After Earth bombed in 2012.
Both Will Smith and Margot Robbie found themselves drawn to the plot for very different reasons.
To follow up their hit comedy Crazy Stupid Love, writer-directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa have merged the con-artist heist thriller with the romantic-comedy genre; a move that was Will Smith's first encouragement with getting involved with the movie.
Will Smith and Margot Robbie star in 'Focus'
Will Smith was drawn to the material both because of the filmmakers and the subject matter. "When I read Focus it was so interesting because it's so many different kinds of movie," he said. "Glenn and John completely ignore genre, so it's a heist film but then it will be a bizarre comedy for awhile and then it's really serious and there is great action. And then there's a wonderful love story in the centre of the film. We would be in scenes sometimes and we would be like, 'This is serious right?' and they'd be like, 'Yeah, but have fun with it.'"
Continue reading: 'Focus' Starring Will Smith Teaches The Art Of The Con
A very odd blend of caper action, dark drama and romantic comedy, this slickly made con-artist romp never quite finds its stride. There's a merciful vein of sharp wit in the script, thanks to writer-directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Crazy Stupid Love) and a spiky performance from Margot Robbie. But Will Smith's presence leaves everything feeling rather tame, compromising his character by making him a nice-guy crook rather than the unpredictable black-comedy protagonist he really should have been.
It opens as the wide-eyed Jess (Robbie) approaches veteran grifter Nicky (Smith) about learning the art of the con. She follows him to New Orleans for some major pickpocketing and double-crossing in the run-up to a big football championship, but Nicky unceremoniously dumps her afterwards. Three years later, they meet again in Buenos Aires, where both appear to be running scams centred around the Formula One team owned by Garriga (Rodrigo Santoro), who's never far from his right-hand goon (Gerald McRaney). With help from his old pal Farhad (Adrian Martinez), Nicky sets out to run his sting. But Jess is a distraction, and the stakes are too high for him to take his eye off the game.
While it's one of the running gags, Nicky's soft centre is a serious problem here, making the movie feel like a vanity project for Smith, who seems far too determined to be sympathetic. (Ficarra and Requa know how to make an anti-hero likeable: see Bad Santa.) Instead, Smith is a jarring combination of beefy physicality, fast-talking thievery and squidgy emotions. Robbie is able to more effectively merge Jess' gung-ho personality with her gleeful criminality, but when they're both together on-screen it's impossible not to feel like everything about the characters' relationship is a big con. So we wait for the script to reveal its clever twists and turns. But they're surprisingly few and oddly inconsequential.

Will Smith appears to be back on track after the disappointment of 'After Earth'.
Last week we reported on an interview that Will Smith had given to Esquire in which he reflected on the commercial and critical disaster of After Earth - the 2013 science-fiction film that starred Smith and his son Jaden as humans settled on a new world, Nova Prime.

"'Wild Wild West' was less painful than 'After Earth' because my son was involved in 'After Earth,' and I led him into it. That was excruciating," mused Smith.

The 46-year-old actor recently admitted it is a "strange thing" to be considered a sex symbol at his age.
Although Will Smith has many adoring female fans, the 46-year-old actor doesn't look at himself as an attractive man, especially when he is compared to the likes of his fellow Hollywood stars, including Denzel Washington.
Will Smith recently discussed being considered a sex symbol
While appearing on Tuesday's episode (Feb 24th) of The Ellen DeGeneres Show to promote his new film 'Focus,' Will spoke about why it "feels weird" to be considered a sex symbol and working on his fitness for his latest flick.

Will Smith has reflected on how he got over the failure of 'After Earth'.
After Earth briefly threatened to derail Will Smith's status as one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood. Sure, he's had failures before but this one was one of the poorly executed projects in a long, long time.
Will Smith says the disaster that was After Earth affected him emotionally
"Calling After Earth the worst film ever made may be overstating things, but it's a disaster zone of Chernobyl-esque proportions," said one critic at the time.

The 46-year-old actor recently teased fans about the possibility of releasing new music after a 10-year hiatus.

Will Smith - Stars from the new comedy, crime drama movie 'Focus' were snapped on the red carpet as they arrived for the UK premiere of the film in London, United Kingdom - Wednesday 11th February 2015
The 46-year-old actor recently admitted that he was left feeling troubled when the sci-fi flick was a critical and financial flop in North America.
It could be argued that any movie starring Will Smith was guaranteed the No.1 spot at the box office, especially since his films have grossed over $6.6 billion worldwide, but this all changed after his 2013 sci-fi flick 'After Earth' was a critical and financial flop in North America.
Smith was mentally effected by the poor performance of 'After Earth'
During a press conference on Sunday (Feb 8th) at The Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village, California, for his upcoming film 'Focus,' Smith spoke candidly about being mentally unnerved after his first box office failure, which co-starred his son Jaden.
While sitting at the bar of a hotel lobby one night, a man catches a glimpse of an attractive young woman and goes over to introduce himself. That man is Nicky Spurgeon (Will Smith) and that woman is Jess Barrett (Margot Robbie). When the two go back to Barrett's room for the night, a gunman attacks Spurgeon, demanding all of his money. The problem is, Spurgeon is a seasoned conman, and is able to quickly sniff out a scam when it arises. After imparting both Barrett and her assailant with some lessons in the art of conning, Spurgeon leaves. Three years later, Spurgeon and Barrett will be reunited in a dangerous game of deception and theft.

A solid cast bodes well for this unnecessary remake of the 1982 movie (based on the 1970s musical), but the filmmakers' decision to turn the catchy songs into bland pop numbers is the real mistake. It leaves the entire film feeling empty, highlighting director Will Gluck's clunky direction, which includes coaxing Cameron Diaz to a squirm-inducingly over-the-top performance. Young children probably won't mind, but as the movie lurches awkwardly from one messy set piece to the next, the lack of a decently arranged musical number makes everything look dull and witless.
In Harlem, 10-year-old Annie (Quvenzhane Wallis) is an orphan living in a foster home with four other girls, run by the greedy Miss Hannigan (Diaz). Smart and quick-witted, Annie longs for a day when she can be reunited with her parents. Then she has a run-in with Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx), a workaholic mobile phone executive who's running for New York mayor. Will's advisor Guy (Bobby Cannavale) suggests that he take Annie in temporarily to boost his poll numbers, and once settled in his spacious penthouse apartment she immediately charms Will's assistant Grace (Rose Byrne) and driver Nash (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). And she begins to work her way into Will's heart as well.
From here, Gluck completely misses the point of the play, trying desperately to crank up a ridiculous scam subplot into some big final-act action mayhem. But this never gains any traction at all because it's clear what has to happen in the story. Indeed, the best thing on screen is the strong chemistry between Foxx and Wallis, who find moments of genuine humour and connection even in the silliest slapstick. And they seem almost reluctant every time they have to dive into yet another insipidly revamped song. Pop star Sia worked on them, but loses all the charm in the attempt to turn each one into a chart-topping clone. Fans of the original music will enjoy the brief riffs of the originals audible here and there, and they'll leave the cinema wanting to revisit the old numbers instead of these Frankenstein versions.
