With his forthcoming movie Casa Mi Padre, Will Ferrell had the chance to make a 'nagging idea' into a movie. Inspired by the melodrama of Hispanic telenovelas, Ferrell wanted to create a comedy that mimicked their idiosyncrasies, complete with continuity errors and 'accidentally' repeated footage.
Ferrell revealed to Fox News that he worked "around the clock" with a translator in order to get his accent right for the film. The premise of the movie, in Ferrell's words, is that he is "someone from American comedy kind of inserted into a Spanish language film and the joke being not that I speak Spanish poorly, but that I speak it really well, or as well as I possibly can, and that I'm essentially just a member of an all Latino cast." He said that the idea had been nagging at him for some time and then he "finally got it together."
