Pop group Westlife and glam-rockers The Darkness picked up top accolades at Monday's (01MAR04) METEOR IRELAND MUSIC AWARDS.

The MY LOVE fivesome won Best Irish Pop Act - their fifth Meteor win, while Brit boys The Darkness were named Best International Group at the star-studded bash in Dublin's POINT THEATRE.

Celebrities in attendance included The Corrs, Lionel Richie, COUNTING CROWS, THE Sugababes, U2'S LARRY MULLEN, former BOYZONE star Keith Duffy, KERRY McFADDEN and MONA LISA SMILE star Dominic West.

Beyonce Knowles and Justin Timberlake were absent winners - both were awarded in the Best International Female and Male categories.

Red Hot Chili Peppers picked up their third Meteor award in a row for Best Live Performance at last year's (03) gig at SLANE CASTLE in County Meath, while THE White Stripes won Best Album for Elephant.

Irish winners include The Frames, The Thrills, Cara Dillon, Paddy Casey, DAMIEN DEMPSEY, THE FUTURE KINGS OF SPAIN and DAVE FANNING. Folk collective THE DUBLINERS were awarded with a Lifetime Achievement Award for their musical career spanning over 40 years.
