Wes Anderson's newest comedy, and possibly his best film yet, is now the 9th highest-earning film in a limited opening of all-time.
But it seems cinemagoers do not want to wait for a wider release as the film achieved a great amount of success in ticket sales, and scored a new box office record.
The ensemble comedy brought in a staggering $800,000 after being released in just two theatres in New York and two in Los Angeles for Fox Searchlight.
'Grand Budapest' ended up beating commercially successful films such as 'The Master', which starred the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, as it earned $736,311 when being released in 5 theatres, and Anderson's own 'Moonrise Kingdom' which raked in $522,996 in 4 theatres.
As of now 'Grand Budapest' is in the top ten limited openings of all time (9th), according to Box Office Mojo.
The forthcoming flick also boosts a very impressive ensemble cast which features the likes of Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Tilda Swinton, Willem Dafoe and Harvey Keitel, plus many more.
The story, set in present day, looks back at an unknown writer's memoirs which began at the Grand Budapest Hotel in the fictional Republic of Zubrowka, set in 1932. Ralph Fiennes, who isn't known for his comedy acting, is the protagonist of the tale and plays M. Gustave H, the concierge of the hotel, who inherits a painting from an elderly guest and his lover, but quickly finds himself framed for her murder.
So far, 'Grand Budapest' has had screenings at the Arclight Cinerama Dome in Hollywood and the Landmark in L.A., and the Regal Union Square and the AMC Lincoln Square in Manhattan.
Fox Searchlight's distribution Chief Frank Rodriguez told TheWrap, how the film's early success surpassed the studio's initial predictions.
"We knew the opening would be very good, but this performance is really above anyone's expectations. This really seems to have come together because of a collaboration. Wes and his team have worked really hard to promote it, the theater owners embraced it and our publicity and marketing people hit it out of the park," Rodriguez said. "All that and the great reviews added up to terrific weekend for us."
