The Emperor's New Groove Review

Good
I'll be the first to admit I didn't expect much from The Emperor's New Groove: More Celine Dion-esque song-and-dance numbers, cuddly characters that become cross-promotion devices in McDonald's Happy Meals, and Hollywood stars trying to gain credibility by adding a voice-over job to their resume.

I was dead wrong about all of those things.

Kronk's New Groove Review

Weak
By now you know the drill: Disney follows up just about every animated movie, large or small, with a quicky DVD that can't hope to compare with the original film.

Kronk's New Groove, the successor to the tragically underseen The Emperor's New Groove, is really no different. As the title suggests, the sequel focuses on Kronk (Patrick Warburton), a relatively minor character in the original film (he was the hapless and oblivious bodyguard of the villain), who's now made good in his life as a restaurateur.

Racing Stripes Review

OK
God bless Hollywood's family film genre. Where else could Malcolm in the Middle star Frankie Muniz receive top-billing over Oscar winners Dustin Hoffman and Whoopi Goldberg? And where else could squeaky-clean pop singer Mandy Moore share screen credits with gangster rap sensation Snoop Dogg?

These talents, of course, provide voices to an array of talking animals in the live action heartwarmer Racing Stripes, a sort of stripy Seabiscuit about an orphaned zebra with a horse's heart for racing. The misled mare, aptly nicknamed Stripes, wants desperately to compete with rival horses at the Kentucky Open - the Bluegrass State's natural landscapes contributing an exquisite backdrop to the film's conventional action. Along the way, the zebra is coached by a widowed father (Bruce Greenwood), his dedicated daughter (Hayden Panettiere), and a stable of talking animals including a Shetland pony (Hoffman), a goat (Goldberg), a rooster (Jeff Foxworthy), and two manure-craving flies named Buzz (Steve Harvey) and Scuzz (David Spade).

Manna From Heaven Review

Terrible
The five precocious Burton sisters of Buffalo, NY have given us a precocious film about a group of people so hateful we are forced to try our best to simply ignore them. How's that for skipping the first day of Filmmaking 101?

Manna From Heaven is the story of a Buffalo family who one day discover $20,000 "raining from heaven," wisely decide to split it up, and then go on their merry ways. A decade or so later, every last one of them has grown up to be a loser, having squandered his or her (mostly her) share of the loot. The lone exception is Theresa (Ursula Burton... well of course the good one is going to be played by a Burton sister!) who has become an ash-on-the-forehead nun. In fact, Theresa becomes convinced that the 20 grand of so long ago was not a gift but a loan, and that they must now "pay it back."

The Emperor's New Groove Review

OK

How does Disney do it? How does the studio keep cranking out these cartoons that are so wildly entertaining and seemingly fresh even though it uses the same ingredients year after year?

"The Emperor's New Groove" has all the off-the-shelf elements of your standard Disney 'toon: Beady-eyed baddie? Check! Incompetent henchman? Check. Historical locale and/or exotic cultural setting? Check. Wisecracking animal sidekick? Check. Doofus male lead? Check.

Yet here I am again, absolutely loving this latest assembly line production because it's sprightly, clever and fun, fun, fun.
