Basically the best things in pop culture, smushed together, coming to Soundcloud in March.
It’s official – HBO has the best promotional strategy. Not that the fourth season of Game of Thrones needed any more hype, but it’s getting heaps of it with a new hip hop mixtape. Dragons, kings, ice creature zombie... things – hip hop should fit right in there, right? The new mixtape is intended to help fans catch up on the fantasy series ahead of Season 4 and is called Catch the Throne, because... well, you know.
Turns out, Common is big on hip hop.
But wait, there’s more! Because HBO wouldn’t just bank on some third rate rappers to get the job done, the mixtape features the likes of Common, Wale, Big Boi and DADDY YANKEE (always pegged him for a GoT fan). It also shines the spotlight on some fresh talent like Bodega Bamz and Show Tha Product. Each rapper had a chance to spit fire (pun intended) about the show’s big theme – the struggle for power. It makes perfect sense, according to Common.
The hip-hop world has got some fire back in its belly.
It was the instant classic verse from Lamar that caused the stir, with the 26-year-old dubbing himself the "King of New York" and putting himself in the company of some of the game's very best.
"I heard the barbershops spittin' great debates all the time, Bout who's the best MC? Kendrick, Jigga and Nas," he spits.
Kendrick Lemar, whilst featuring on Big Sean's track 'Control', has attacked many of his rapper peers for taking the trappings of fame for granted.
Kendrick Lamar has not been in the most subtle of moods of late. He's started to find the trappings of fame and fortune irritating or so his lyrics would suggest.

Lamar's rant features of Big Sean's upcoming Hall of Fame album. The 7 minute long track, in which Lamar raps, has not been released owing to sample-clearance issues. This track, 'Control', is highly critical of the attributes of rap culture, including the frivolous lifestyles of other celebrities such as Lindsay Lohan.

Joan Jett was honoured at the 2013 Sunset Strip Festival, Linkin Park played an amazing headline set and Chris Brown even made an appearance.
The sixth edition of Hollywood's Sunset Strip Music Festival was a memorable affair with some amazing surprise features and a great show from this year's honouree Joan Jett with her band The Blackhearts.
The event took place last weekend (August 1st - 3rd) with an astounding 15,000 fans showing up to soak in the rock vibes. It kicked off on the Thursday as veteran rock chick Joan Jett was landed with the Elmer Valentine Award celebrating her influence on the Sunset Strip music scene. Following a stunning performance, the star told Rolling Stone how good it felt to be once again playing on the Strip. 'It felt really fulfilling in a lot of ways. When I left LA, it was with a hangdog vibe', she explained. 'I had the impression. of people laughing at me, saying. 'We told you girls couldn't play rock and roll'. It's very humbling. People are very sincere in their praise and you can't take it lightly.'
The rapper welcomed Kanye West, Lil Wayne, TLC, J. Cole, Wale and more on stage in the two hour, sold-out show.
For the 16,000 fans who attended Drake's OVO Fest show in Toronto, the whole evening was full of perfect "I Was There" moments with appearances from the exalted lords and ladies of R&B and hiphop royalty.
With an acronym that stands for 'October's Very Own' (October referring to Drake's birth month), OVO Festival is an event that has seen success in recent years and looks to get even bigger still. Previous years have seen performances from Stevie Wonder, Snoop Lion, Eminem, Jay Z and Nicki Minaj but the Canadian rapper and organiser outdid himself at OVO Fest 2013.

Rapper J. Cole's latest album 'Born Sinner' has topped the Billboard 200 album chart in its third week of release, zooming past rivals Wale and Kanye West.
J. Cole's sophomore album Born Sinner has shot to the top of the Billboard 200 album chart after its release on 18th June 2013. According to Billboard, a case such as J. Cole's - where an album climbs to the top as opposed to debuting at No.1 - is rare due to most titles enjoying their best sales weeks during their debut frame and struggle to maintain momentum to compete with newer albums. Ever since Nielsen SoundScan started analysing the chart in 1991, there have been 583 albums to reached No. 1. Of those, only 13% (76 records) did not debut at No. 1 - J Cole's Born Sinner is now one of the few to do so. However, this is the sixth smallest selling week ever in SoundScan's records with just 58,000 sold to claim the top spot.

The 28 year-old North Carolinan tweeted his excitement and thanked his fans for helping him get to No.1: "3 weeks later. #1 Album in the country. Born Sinner. Thank You." According to USA Today, after its release Born Sinner had to contend with spending its first fortnight at No. 2, first behind Kanye West's Yeezus and then Wale's The Gifted then overtook the other two rappers after selling 58,000 in its third week. It has now sold 439,000 copies surpassing Yeezus' 431,000. The Gifted was No. 2 this week with 50,000 followed by Yeezus with 39,000,

Changes all over the Billboard Album Chart This Week. Well, at least in the top five.
This week introduced an unexpected change in the Billboard chart – rapper Wale came out of the blue to claim the top spot in the chart with his brand new album, The Gifted. Wale snatched the number one from Kanye’s Yeezus, which this week had an 80% drop in sales, taking the record down to number 3. Yeezus only managed to sell 65,000 copies this week, which is respectable, but still nothing compared to last week’s 324,000.
Wale emerged seemingly out of nowhere to dominate the Billboard chart this week.
This debut marks Wale’s first crack at the Billboard number one. The closest the rapper had come previously was his previous release, 2011’s Ambition, which entered the chart at number two and never went any higher than that. The album sold a respectable 164,000 that week, however had to take the second spot after Justin Bieber’s Under the Mistletoe debuted with over 210,000 copies sold.
