Movie Reviews Journey Mysterious Island

Journey Michael Phillips No Doubt Roger Ebert Volcanoes

There's not much point in approaching Journey Mysterious Island as serious cinema fare. It's one of those "lost island" tales with Volcanoes threatening to erupt, prehistoric creatures on the loose, and pristine jungles with nary a dead leaf to spoil the green. "This is transcendently goofy," Roger Ebert remarks in the Chicago Sun-Times , remarking tongue in cheek No Doubt, "I hope you understand I enjoyed most of this stuff." And Ebert doesn't invoke the old cliché about being entertained by a good bad movie, but he comes close "It isn't a 'good' movie in the usual sense (or most senses)," he concludes, "but it is jolly and good-natured." Ebert's fellow Chicagoan, Michael Phillips of the Tribune , is not so softhearted. "It's only disguised as fun," Phillips writes. (He also doesn't much like the 3D cartoon that precedes the movie, Daffy's Rhapsody. " Grating and pushy," he calls it.) Neil Genzlinger, in a brief 230-word summary of Journey Mysterious Island , doesn't even attempt to critique it. He sums up, "The movie makes no effort to do anything other than what is expected, and it succeeds at that."
