Vin Diesel And Dwayne Johnson Being "Separated" During 'Furious 8' Press Tour

Vin Diesel Dwayne Johnson

The reported on-set tensions between Furious 8 stars Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Vin Diesel seem to be continuing throughout the movie’s press tour, with new reports suggesting that the studio is having to keep them apart.

When Diesel was promoting the new film at CinemaCon this week, Johnson’s absence was noted upon, particularly as he was also at the convention on Tuesday promoting his other new movies, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Baywatch.

“They're keeping them separated as much as possible,” an insider told The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday (March 30th), intimating that the feud that started last year was still ongoing.

Vin Diesel Wants Audiences To Have Fun With XXx

Vin Diesel

So how does he maintain the physical demands of these beefy roles at age 49? "I work out less and enjoy it more these days," he says. "It's a time in my week where I don't have to juggle things. I can just exercise and be present. When I play Dominic in Fast, I want to look strong but authentic, not buff. But to play Xander in xXx, I work with MMA fighters. And I did a lot of yoga when I played Riddick. There aren't a ton of constants, maybe just cardio work and a lot of core."

It's been 15 years since he last played Xander, and Diesel feels that the time is right for his return. "I think there's a need to revisit this hero archetype," he says. "He is in some ways the reluctant hero, in some ways the antihero, but his individuality shines."

XXx: Return Of Xander Cage Review

OK

It's been 15 years since Vin Diesel walked away from his XXX role, killing off the character before the 2005 sequel. Both films were pretty terrible, mindless action connected by the thinnest imaginable plots. And this franchise relaunch is just as random, with a nonsensical thriller storyline that exists merely to string together a sequence of explosive stunt trickery. Thankfully, this time the cast and crew make it clear that they know how preposterous this is.

No, Xander (Diesel) isn't dead. He's whizzing around the jungles of the Dominican Republic, wooing sweaty, scantily clad babes and keeping the locals cheering at his exploits. Then CIA black ops director Marke (Toni Collette) appears to draft him back into the XXX programme, because she needs to recapture a gadget terrorists are using to drop satellites from orbit onto carefully chosen targets. OK, sure. X assembles a team of his old pals (actually newcomers, played by Kris Wu, Ruby Rose and Rory McCann), plus a hot computer geek (Nina Dobrev), and chases down the team of equally extreme baddies (Donnie Yen, Deepika Padukone, Tony Jaa and Michael Bisping). And as they head to London, the Philippines and Detroit, everyone realises that there's something else going on here.

There probably isn't a law of physics that isn't broken in this movie. These characters fly, are shot, fall from great heights and are blown to smithereens, but emerge unscathed, apart from their excessive tattoos (Xander has somehow redesigned his logo neck art for the reboot). Refreshingly, everyone keeps their tongues firmly planted in their cheeks, winking at the camera at each ridiculous moment. Such as the chase in which motorcycles magically transform into water-bikes. Or when Xander does a spot of Alpine skiing through a rainforest. Or the frankly jaw-dropping weightless fight scene in a power-diving airplane.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage Trailer

Xander Cage has led quite a life, he's been an extreme sports celebrity with his own TV show, worked as an undercover spy for the National Security Agency and saved the world from a deadly toxin being released. Xander wasn't exactly the most obvious person to become a spy as his celebrity status made him know around the world but his arrogance and known run-ins with the cops are will publicised.

He was recruited by NSA Agent Augustus Gibbons who saw potential in the daredevil. To test his skills, Gibbon's dropped Cage into a number of life threatening situations including an armed robbery and an escape from a cocaine plantation run by violent cartel bosses. Having successfully completed his tests, Xander found himself face to face with a Russia mobster who was planning to release toxic matter which is capable of killing millions. His mission was a success and he also found love with a Russian FSB agent called Yelena. Realising that the life of a spy isn't all it's cut out to be, the pair retire to Bora Bora.

Years later a crooked agent called Cobb is thought to have assassinated Cage leading to Gibbon's to find a new XXX agent - a title that only seems temporary for its holders.

The Last Witch Hunter Is Personal For Vin Diesel

Vin Diesel Michael Caine

At the peak of his powers with the Fast & Furious and Guardians of the Galaxy franchises, Vin Diesel is not only still working to revive both Riddick and xXx, but he has just launched a new bid for an ongoing movie hero in The Last Witch Hunter. And this role is based on something very near and dear to his heart: the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons.

The Last Witch HunterVin Diesel stars as Kaulder in The Last Witch Hunter

A long-time D&D enthusiast, Diesel based the film's witch hunter Kaulder on his gaming alter-ego Melkor ("Obviously I stole the name from Tolkien"). And he's thrilled that he has finally been able to make a movie in this genre. "The studio was very excited about making The Last Witch Hunter, and yet because they were coming into my realm, fantasy, my standards were so high," he says. "I've been waiting 10, 15 years to make a fantasy movie. Even longer! Trying to find something in the fantasy space that would be exciting, something that I could do that would speak to that Dungeons & Dragons nerd that I enjoyed being for so much of my life."

The Last Witch Hunter Review

Good

Vin Diesel makes a bid for yet another franchise with a supernatural action romp that's both deeply ridiculous and enjoyably entertaining. The premise is basically Underworld with witches, and Diesel uses his meathead charm to coast through his role as an immortal warrior. Thankfully, the crazed production design and some solid costars do most of the acting for him. And director Breck Eisner keeps the pace snappy enough to hold the audience's interest, even if we're laughing at it rather than with it.

The Last Witch Hunter

Diesel plays Kaulder, who in the 13th century killed a nefarious witch queen (Julie Engelbrecht) and was cursed with immortality. Now 800 years later, he's living the high life in Manhattan and leading the Axe and Cross to contain the world's witch population. His assistant is the 36th Dolan (Michael Caine), who has just named the 37th (Elijah Wood) when they're attacked by the mysterious Belial (Olaf Darri Olafsson). He's determined to resurrect the queen and return humanity to the dark ages. So Kaulder sets out to stop him, teaming up with helpful witch Chloe (Rose Leslie), who has some special abilities that aid them as things get increasingly crazed.

Vin Diesel Says Online Abuse Is The "Dark Side Of Fame"

Vin Diesel

Vin Diesel has spoken about the “dark side of fame” in a new interview that comes just over a week after he responded to social media users who were criticising him for his physical appearance.

The current star of The Last Witch Hunter, which had its European premiere on Monday night, spoke to BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat about the invasive nature of social media and paparazzi attention, and how that it causes some celebrities to become more reclusive than they would want to be.

When he was asked about online comments and the rise of body-shaming in general, the 48 year old actor replied: “It's a lot of negative stuff. I think that it is ultimately wrong, I think people should be less judgemental and more just loving.”

Vin Diesel Confirms Plans For "One Last Trilogy" Of 'Fast & Furious' Movies

Vin Diesel Paul Walker

Good news for Fast & Furious fans today, as the franchise’s star, producer and co-creator Vin Diesel has confirmed that there will be another three movies before the series ends.

Writing on his Facebook page on Sunday (September 27th), Diesel said that Universal Studios had given the green light to a final trilogy of movies to be made to bring the franchise to a close. Given that that first instalment came way back in 2001, and that the eighth movie has a tentative release date of spring 2017, it’s entirely possible that the Fast & Furious movies will have spanned two decades by the time it’s through.
