On July 17th 1996, the Trans World Airlines Flight 800 exploded in the air just 12 minutes after it had taken off from JFK International Airport en route Paris and Rome. All 230 passengers who had been on board were deceased, with the final passenger accounted for after 10 months. After the FBI took interviews from eye-witnesses and launched an investigation to establish whether or not a terrorist act had been committed, it was decided that the accident was caused by a fuel/air explosion in the centre wing tank, despite many eye-witness accounts mentioning seeing a streaking object in the sky like a missile. Many of the witnesses were reported to have been silenced by the FBI and the agents conducting the interviews suspiciously released only summaries of the accounts and not word-for-word transcripts.
'TWA Flight 800' attempts to look into what really happened to that ill-fated flight on the 17th anniversary of the incident. What were the FBI hiding, what really caused the explosion (when inside accounts suggest there were no mechanical failures) and why have none of the death certificates been finalised? These are some of the questions raised in this telling documentary directed by the Emmy Award-winning Kristina Borjesson and produced by physician Dr. Tom Stalcup. It is set to premiere on Epix on July 17th 2013.
