Beth Boothby is a hugely successful American gospel singer and an evangelical Christian. She and her fianc' Steve decide to leave their home in Texas to travel to Scotland for two years, to go door to door and preach about their faith.
While they are initially rejected by the locals in Edinburgh, the couple eventually find acceptance in a small village called Tressock. The locals are somewhat on the savage side but are willing to listen to Beth and Steve. They even invite them to participate in their May Day celebrations.
However, this young couple's true natures are soon revealed. Beth is a born again Christian; prior to this, she was a teen pop star in the Britney Spears mould. Steve's faith is shaken when he is seduced by a woman called Lolly. And there are rumours of a Pagan cult in the village.
This last rumour turns out to be somewhat true; thanks to an accident involving the local nuclear power plant, the female citizens of Tressock are barren. To restore fertility to their population, they need to sacrifice two pure souls - could Beth and Steve be the answer to their prayers?
The Wicker Tree is directed by Robin Hardy, who directed the 1973 adaptation of The Wicker Man. Both films touch on the subject of religion. Christopher Lee makes a small cameo, where he reprises his role as Lord Summerisle.
