Nicholas Barclay was a 13-year-old boy from San Antonio, Texas who one day mysteriously disappeared while out with his friends. Three and a half years later, a person comes forward claiming to be Barclay and that he was the victim of a kidnapping nightmare. He was found miles away in Spain which was only the beginning of the strange circumstances that arose. Although Barclay was blonde and blue-eyed, he appeared to have returned home with brown eyes and a much darker complexion. He seemed unable to speak English without a foreign accent and his personality seemed very different indeed. Nonetheless, the family and authorities believed he was Barclay and accepted him into their lives. It took a suspicious private investigator to uncover the truth that the person claiming to be Barclay was a serial imposter.
This thrilling documentary based on a real life story follows the lives of the Barclay family and everyone involved at the time of the missing child case. It investigates the reasoning behind the imposter's obsession and why the family were so eager to believe despite the obvious differences between the two people. Directed by Bart Layton ('Banged Up Abroad') and produced by Dimitri Doganis alongside executive producers Simon Chinn ('Project Nim', 'Man On Wire') and John Battsek ('One Day In September', 'The Tillman Story'), 'The Imposter' is set for release on August 24th 2012.
