Shin Dong-Hyuk was born in a North Korean labour camp known as Camp 14 or Kaechon internment camp. All his life he was subjected to brutal hard labour that was often dangerous, as well as some of the most horrific torture one could ever imagine. His arms were twisted, he was beaten regularly and even suffered severe burns after he was forced to lie over a fire. He had to watch his mother and brother be executed right in front of him as a young boy and knew that there was no chance of release. However, one day, aged 23, he managed to escape through an electric fence and entered a world of total unfamiliarity. Institutionalised, alone and afraid, Shin Dong-Hyuk was forced to make a life for himself from scratch and now reveals the extent of his horrific childhood.
'Camp 14: Total Control Zone' is the shocking new documentary about North Korean government policies directed by Marc Wiese ('Das Mädchen und das Foto', 'Kanun - The Law of Honour'). It features an extraordinary interview with Shin Dong-Hyuk himself as well as some former prison guards at the camp who were responsible for inflicting the torture. It is set to appear in the UK on October 4th 2013.
