Orcas, often known as Killer Whales, are often seen as some of the most friendly and intelligent creatures in the world, even inspiring the multi-million dollar grossing family movie 'Free Willy'. However, underneath the apparently docile façade, these orcas are just like any other animal; unpredictable and, given its immense size, extremely dangerous in some circumstances. Tilikum is one whale who remains in captivity in SeaWorld and is responsible for the deaths of three people, two of them being whale trainers. After the death of Dawn Brancheau, the aquarium was fined for a series of safety violations and the reasons behind Tilikum's rapid change of disposition was investigated by a number of sources revealing the cruel method that was employed to bring these creatures into captivity. That being uncovered erased the suggestion of a random accident, as many of the mammals were suggested to have suffered a kind of psychosis brought on by their cramped and dark living conditions.
Gabriela Cowperthwaite ('City Lax: An Urban Lacrosse Story') directs and co-writes this heart-wrenching and painfully truthful documentary on the most notorious captive orca in the world. It looks into the true intelligence of the animals and the barbaric methods used to enslave them and, essentially, destroy them. Gabriela teams up with her 'City Lax' co-writer Eli B. Despres ('Wilderness Survival for Girls') on 'Blackfish' set for release on July 26th 2013.
