For most of his life, Nick Flynn has never known his father. He has remained absent for most of his life, serving time in prison for forging cheques. Nick's father, called Jonathan, is a self-proclaimed poet and spent most of his time in prison writing letters and poems.
Nick soon becomes disinterested in his father, and, as an adult, takes a job working in a homeless shelter. It is there that he runs into his father, now living on the streets but calling himself an 'upstanding citizen.'
The reunion between father and son isn't an emotional one; it's just awkward. While he boasts to Nick about the bidding war over several of his poems, it turns out that that isn't the truth at all - shortly after being released, Jonathan takes a job as a taxi driver but eventually loses his job and then, his apartment.
Nick is now presented with an opportunity to get to know his father. Will he take the opportunity, or will he decide not to have anything to do with Jonathan?
Being Flynn is based on the 2005 memoir by Nick Flynn, Another Bullshit Night In Suck City. The film is directed by Paul Weitz (About A Boy; Little Fockers).
