Ever since the age of fifteen, Albert Nobbs has worked and lived in hotels. Thirty years later, he is a dedicated servant at Morrison's Hotel. He goes out of his way to make the guests feel at home and is generally well-liked.
But Albert has a secret: he is really a she. Albert was created as a means to get by in nineteenth century Ireland, where poverty was rife. Albert has gone by her given name for so long that she can't remember what her real name is.
She isn't the only one with a secret, though. Albert meets painter Hubert Page and soon discovers that he is really a woman, too. Hubert tells Albert to pursue his dream of owning a shop and having a wife.
Albert decides to court a young maid called Helen but she is not interested, preferring the somewhat volatile Joe, who also works at the hotel. Helen's nature allows Joe to take advantage of her, leaving her broken-hearted and with only Albert to talk to, who is starting to wonder if he'll ever get the quiet life he longs for.
Albert Nobbs is adapted from the 1982 stage production - which also starred Glenn Close - which, in turn, was based on the 1927 short story by George Moore.
