Ai Weiwei is a Chinese contemporary artist who has been the subject of controversy throughout the country and the rest of the world. He is famous for his political activism and work in regards to human rights, the severe censorship and corrupt legal system of China. His masterpieces mainly circle around conceptual art created to reach out to people and allow them to question the country's politics. Authorities in China have responded with hostility; detaining him for more than 2 months with no charges, beating him so badly he's had to have brain surgery and bulldozing his studio which was built as part of a cultural initiative in the area. Ai is also popular for investigating the 2008 Sichuan earthquake where a school was destroyed killing over 5,000 people; he wanted to see if a cover-up was made due to a 'shoddy tofu construction'.
This powerful documentary is set to have a massive impact on society's perception of the world, particularly amongst Chinese audiences. 'Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry' is the directorial debut of journalist Alison Klayman who was granted extraordinary insight into the life of Ai. It's truly an empowering story of a brave artist determined to put his life on the line to protect the minds of people around the nation. It will hit cinemas soon in the UK from August 10th 2012.
