Sischy, who worked at Interview, The New Yorker and Vanity Fair magazines throughout her career, passed away from breast cancer aged 63, and several stars took to social media to pay tribute to the writer, including Sir Elton, who made her godmother to his son Elijah alongside Sischy's wife Sandra Brant.

He writes on Instagram.com, "Ingrid Sischy was my best friend and the sister I never had. Like (fashion designer) Gianni Versace before her, she inspired me, educated me and was always there for me, and for David (Furnish). I cannot imagine life without her love and wisdom and humour. God speed you my dearest angel. Our story is special and so were you. My love to Sandy Brant, her beautiful wife and our beautiful friend. Forever, Elton."

Madonna writes, "Ingrid Sischy you were a true Visionary! With a great mind and an open Heart! A real Freedom Fighter! Your words and actions will live on forever! may G*D (God) Bless you on your journey" while Beckham adds on Twitter.com, "Devastated to hear the sad news about Ingrid Sischy. A true loss to the fashion industry."

West writes, "My prayers go to Ingrid Sischy's family... I will forever appreciate her sincerity... She was a super nice person," while Cyndi Lauper posts, "I will miss Ingrid Sischy. Such a loss" and Oscar-winning actress Julianne Moore adds, "RIP #IngridSischy (husband) Bart and I will miss you so much."

Rose MCGowan, Jessica Chastain, Elizabeth Banks and Sandra Bernhard also wrote tributes.

Sischy worked as editor of Interview magazine from 1990 to 2008. In 1997, she joined Vanity Fair, and at the time of her death she was contributing editor of the publication and international editor of publishing house Conde Nast.
