THE Velvet Underground star John Cale paid a touching tribute to his late mum as he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in London on Friday (19Nov10).
The British rocker, a founding member of the influential American band, was handed the prestigious medal by Charles, Prince of Wales in recognition of his services to music over four decades.
Cale, who arrived at the ceremony at Buckingham Palace with his hair dyed bright pink and blue, admitted it felt "strange" to receive the honour but insisted it would have made his Welsh mum Margaret very happy.
He said, "My mother would be very proud if she were alive today."
