Modern Bluesman Bobby Blue Bland Dies in Memphis Aged 83

Tags: Van Morrison - Otis Redding - Grateful Dead - The Band

Bobby (Blue) Bland, the balladeer whose sophisticated style modernized the blues, has died at his home in Germantown, near Memphis, aged 83. Bobby's death was confirmed his son Rodd, who played drums in his band. Despite possessing all the natural attributes of, say, Ray Charles and B.B King, Bland never reached the same lofty heights as some of his more popular contemporaries though remained a mainstay on the rhythm-and-blues circuit for decades.

His vocals, punctuated by the occasional James Brown esque shout, took on an air of emotional pleading and he influenced everyone from Otis Redding to Wilson Pickett. Younger music fans may recognise Mr Bland's 1974 single 'Ain't No Love In The Heart of the City' on his 2001 album The Blueprint.

Mr Bland matched his sharp vocals with elegant stage wear and became a hugely recognisable performer on the circuit. He formed a close working bond with trumpet player and arranger Joe Scott, the men accounting for more than 30 Top 20 rhythm-and-blues singles for Duke Records in Houston. Many contemporary rock bands covered songs from these years, including The Grateful Dead (Love Light), The Band (Share Your Love With Me), and Van Morrison (Ain't Nothing You Can Do).

Mellody Hobson Marries George Lucas, But Which Legend Played Live?

Mellody Hobson has married her long-time partner - Star Wars director George Lucas - at Skywalker Ranch in Marin County. The ceremony went ahead on Saturday afternoon (June 29, 2013), with former New Jersey Senator Bill Bradley giving away the bride and George's son Jett serving as the best man. The director and producer's daughters Amanda and Katie served as bridesmaids, according to the movie mogul's spokesperson.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison played live at the reception, with the soulful Janelle Monae also playing a set. Steven Spielberg was also in attendance and director Francis Ford Coppola read a poem by Maya Angelou. That's some guest-list.

Lucas became engaged to DreamWorks Animation chair Hobson, 43, in January. She is also head of the Chicago-based investment management firm Ariel Investments and chairman of Ariel Mutual Funds. Oh, and she's a director at Estee Lauder, Groupon and Starbucks as well as a regular contributor at CBS - in other words, she's a big player. A huge player. It will be her first marriage, though the second for Lucas, 68.

Van, I admire and appreciate what you've given us in your music. I know there are many people (below) who slag you for one reason or another. But they don't know you. Neither do I. I'm just grateful for your amazing music and I would like to thank you. You are the man, Van!

Had the unfortunate displeasure of seeing van morrison at the united palace theater in NYC last night. The venue was excellent, the crowd ready, but he clearly did not deliver. He played for about 90 minutes, and did an excellent job covering his new material. But he did not play ANY of his older music, except for a poor rendition of GLORIA. There was no crowd interaction, and he never even introduced the band. At the end of the show, when the lights came up, most of the crowd was still in their seats, waiting for perhaps an encore when he would play "moondance", "brown-eyed girl" or something. But his ego, superiority complex, arrogance would not allow it. I have never heard a crowd leaving a concert so disappointed, at times chanting "Van Sucks", and the common theme was what a waste of $150. I understand an artist wanting to present his new material, but to not toss a loyal audience a bone is insulting!!!! I would not waste my money on him again.

Oh yea, I forgot to mention Van played EXACTLY ninety minutes and then walked off the stage. Everyone thought he was taking a break but, when the lights went on and the roadies started picking up the instruments we all realized we just got conned into spending $150 each for ninety minutes of uninspired music with no beverages!

The rest of the spirit poem is written while in trance second partSo they return their outer shellIt was only lent to you so you can't keep it nor sellRemember the grave you have made isn't a spirit storeYou are only giving the body back to its owner for sureOnly flesh and bones decaying to its atom coreBut the soul surely beyond your mind shoreYou shall see the astral body with magical loreHe is not dead but dancing on the tune of Angelic fluteAnd so this isn't for earthly commercial musical recruitBut for spiritual awakening from this life's doomsAs human's already paying high price for being arrogant foolsSo answer the angelic knock on your door have you got the clueYou purpose to send a message to humanity not for false applauseBefore your days wither and time swiftly flowMystic Scheherazade

I saw Van Morrison March 11, 2008 in Austin TX and the show completely sucked. I paid $300 for a pair of tickets and was very excited at the prospect of seeing Van for the first time. Van played the songs from his new album (which is fine)but, he was too arrogant to play his older hits. He was completely oblivious to the crowd and was "going through the motions". What was even worse was he mandated the bars at the Austin Music Hall close the moment he stepped on stage!! No one in the venue could by a soft drink much less a c**ktail or beer. Management said Van would not play unless the bars closed because he is a recovering alcoholic. Are you kidding me?? I write this post to warn all prospective Van Morrison concert attendees. Save your money and play one of his CDs instead!!
