TV On The Radio's bassist Gerard Smith has dropped out of the band's summer (11) tour after he was diagnosed with lung cancer.
The musician was told he has the disease after the group finished recording its album Nine Types Of Light, which is due out next month (Apr11).
Smith is now undergoing treatment and will miss out on dates across America and Europe later this year (11) while he battles the illness.
A statement on the band's website reads, "Upon the completion of Nine Types of Light, Gerard was diagnosed with lung cancer. As a result, he has been undergoing treatment and will be unable to participate in the upcoming tour.
"Gerard is fortunate enough to have health insurance and is receiving excellent medical care. Already we have seen dramatic results. Combine that with Gerard's legendarily willful (sic) disposition and it might just be cancer that has the problem. We appreciate your concern and support for Gerard and his family."
