Those who've heard Tunng's latest album, Good Arrows (released 27 August on Full Time Hobby), will know Bullets (released 15th October 2007 through Full Time Hobby) as the standout track on a disc full of mini-classics. Those who haven't are in for a real treat. Currently causing a storm among bloggers worldwide, Bullets is a shining example of Tunng's new pop-oriented direction. But this is twisted pop to say the least. Built on an oompah-style beat and an ELO-on-Ritalin melody, sounds of clacking typewriter keys and tin whistles pan in and out, the combined effect of which is both strange and compulsive. And then there's the lyrics, which contain some of the most phonetically pleasing couplets you'll hear all year. "We're catching bullets in our teeth/It's hard to do but they taste sweet/And if they take a couple out/We try to work things out," they say.
With feet still planted firmly in the leftfield, Tunng have produced their most accessible album to date. So while Bullets, with its myriad of sampled sounds, effects and loops is as sonically exciting as anything the band have done yet, it's also got a tune your milkman could hum.
