The Celebrities That South Park Loves To Hate

Game of Thrones is one of the most popular TV series on the box at the moment but that hasn’t stopped cartoon comedy South Park from creating a parody episode about GoT creator, George RR Martin. The fantasy writer has been characterised in his own personal South Park episode as an individual obsessed with the male genitalia, something which the screenwriter sought to deny as one of his personality traits when speaking at the San Diego Comic-Con.

Martin has yet to watch his episode and whether he will remains unknown. "I’m a sensitive soul, would it be rough on me?" he asks. "I don’t know, we’ll see."

Of course, this isn’t the first time that the adult animated series has shown nothing is off limits in its productions and, for better or worse, South Park founders, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, have created some of their funniest episodes poking fun at various celebrities.

Bono - More Crap

Bono could not hide from Matt Stone and Trey Parker's sartorial pen

In this episode of season 11, South Park goes right back to its toilet humour basics and takes U2 singer, Bono, with it. The episode starts with Stan’s father, Randy, taking what he believes to be the world’s biggest crap. His claims of a world-record breaking poo, however, are challenged.

The episode satirises Bono throughout as ‘seeming like such a piece of crap’ despite his talent, achievements and humanitarian work. This is brought to a climax when it turns out that Bono is not the record holder for the biggest crap, but that he actually is the record.

Bono is, literally, the world’s biggest crap.

Kanye West - Fishsticks

Kanye West has featured in two South Park episodes

The beauty of this sartorial episode is that Parker and Stone have used such a straight-forward and simple joke to highlight Kanye West’s inability to connect with public perception around him. Fishsticks is a joke created by Jimmy (credited by Cartman) with the punch line accusing the joke recipient of being a gay fish.

West’s character struggles to take this as anything but literal and fights through the episode to both understand the joke and disprove its end result. He is not a gay fish.

Therein, of course, lies its beauty: this self-proclaimed genius cannot understand something made up by a little boy. Much to the pleasure of viewers, West’s gay fish caricature lives on in the season 17 follow-up, The Hobbit, that takes aim at West’s wife, Kim Kardashian.

Paris Hilton - Stupid, Spoiled Whore

Paris Hilton was not depicted particularly kindly in her episode of South Park

Uncompromising in its attack, this episode isn’t particularly clever in its parody but that doesn’t mean it’s any less brilliant. Perfect in so many ways, the episode refuses subtly.

From Paris Hilton’s Stupid, Spoiled Whore store and Wendy’s frustrations with it to the suicide of Hilton’s dog and her purchase of the perfect companion in Butters for $250 million, this production is in your face about what it thinks of the individual it is satirising.

When asked what she thought of the episode, Hilton said: "I haven’t seen it, but when people copy you, that’s like the most flattering thing." To which Matt Stone responded: "That’s terrible that she’s flattered by it."

Mel Gibson - The Passion Of The Jew

Mel Gibson and his biblical epic, The Passion of the Christ, got a hammering from South Park 

Mel Gibson’s epic biblical drama, Passion of the Christ, took the country by storm in 2004 with its huge commercial success spawning debates about religion, the division of American and Mel Gibson's sanity actually is.

Cartman obviously hates Jews and dares Kyle to watch The Passion of the Christ: the recent box office success that proves Cartman’s theory that everybody hates Jews. Stan and Kenny also watch it declaring it a snuff movie.

Consequences of the boys watching this film then arise as Stan and Kenny try to get their money back from Gibson and Kyle starts to regret his religious heritage. Even Cartman, a self-confessed Gibson worshipper who believes he’s finally been given a reason for hating the Jews, isn’t spared Gibson’s self-obsessed religious mania before Gibson defecates on Cartman’s face and runs off whopping in the tradition of Daffy Duck.
