On July 4th 2009, an unspeakable disaster took place in the small town of Claridge, Maryland which sits on the eastern shore in Chesapeake Bay. During the annual July 4th celebrations, masses of people enjoying the water became victims of a deadly parasite that infected their host and began eating their organs. It could have been prevented when two researchers testing the water discovered dangerous levels of toxicity and reported it to the mayor, but, fearing a bad reputation and a fall in tourism, he chose to ignore it and let his happy town enjoy the festivities amongst the mutated creatures in the water. 911 calls flooded in and hospitals became overcrowded over the amount of people concerned about infection. The extent of the contagion caused victims to lose control over their minds and their bodies as the parasites rapidly began to mutate. Until now, all footage of the events have been kept under wraps by the government.
This horrific sci-fi thriller is truly a strong contender against the ghost stories of popular cinema culture, but then, what would you expect from the producers of 'Paranormal Activity' and 'Insidious' who started the craze in the first place? Directed by Oscar winner Barry Levinson ('Sleepers', 'Toys', 'Rain Man') and written by Michael Wallach in his screenplay debut, 'The Bay' is one of those films that will truly put you off seaside trips over the coming months. It is set for release on November 2nd 2012.
