John and Jenny Grogan are newlyweds who've just moved to start a new life in the sunnier climates of West Palm Beach, Florida. They're both journalists and settle into new jobs at rival newspapers.

As the two get used to their new lives, the new house and marriage questions are asked about starting a family, John is a little dubious and the idea doesn't really know how children would fit into their lifestyle, Jenny on the other hand is positive having kids in the right thing to do. After speaking to a work collegue, John thinks it would be a great idea to get a puppy to try and calm Jenny's wishes of motherhood.

The couple welcome a brand new yellow Labrador puppy, Marley, into their family and it turns out he's quite a handful! A playful pup that loves getting into trouble and also appears to be an escape artist. As Marley grows, he sees The Grogans through some difficult times and proves to be just as hard to handle as a toddler.
