Anna Marie Hoover, like any mother, knew that her young son, John Edgar, would grow up to accomplish great things. But she did not expect that he would grow up to become the FBI's first director.
During his long tenure as the director of the Bureau of Investigation - later to become the Federal Bureau of Investigation - that started in 1924 and ended with his death in 1972, John Edgar would be credited with many achievements that made the FBI an efficient crime fighting organisation. One of his ideas was to instigate a method of catching criminals by identifying them by their fingerprints - a controversial idea at the time, but one that proved to be successful.
However, there were many secrets surrounding John that threatened to end his career, including rumours about his alleged infidelity. There were also rumours that John was using the FBI for illegal purposes, such as collecting confidential files about high ranking political figures. John Edgar Hoover witnessed three devastating wars and watched eight presidents rule the country, which in turn shaped how America is kept safe today.
