Caius Marcus is a brilliant Roman general who is hailed as 'the hero of Rome', after returning from a war against the Volscians, a neighbouring Italian tribe. Rome wins the war and takes the city of Corioles. In recognition of his part in the war, Caius Marcus is surnamed Coriolanus.
The Roman senate offers to make Coriolanus consul - the highest elected office in the Roman republic. Coriolanus agrees, until he is told he must win over the plebeians, who he holds strong contempt for.
At first, it appears that Coriolanus has won the votes of the common people. However, two tribunes, Brutus and Sicinius, persuade the plebeians to change their minds, which drives the proud Coriolanus into a rage, causing him to speak out against popular rule. Unfortunately for the hero of Rome, Brutus and Sicinius twist his words and send Coriolanus into exile, calling him a 'traitor to Rome'.
Banished from the city, Coriolanus vows to take revenge. He teams up with his sworn enemy, Tullus Aufidius, the leader of Volscians and the very leader Coriolanus fought against. The former general's timing could not have been more better; Aufidius had been planning a fresh attack on Rome. The two make peace and start to plot how to take down Rome.
Directed by Ralph Fiennes, Coriolanus is an adaptation of the Shakespeare play. It retains the classic dialogue but makes the setting more modern.
