Morton Schmidt and Greg Jenko were enemies in high school. Schmidt was a nerd who looked like Eminem in an attempt to be cool. Jenko was a jock who took particular delight in bullying Schmidt. In a twist of fate, the pair end up at the same police academy after graduation.
They decide to put their differences aside and become friends. They ace their degree and become policemen. Both have high hopes for their career, picturing car chases and violence. However, all they ever seem to do is cycle around the park, on patrol.
Things pick up when they get the opportunity to take part in a drugs bust, which they screw up. Their boss tells them about a programme which was set up in the 1980's that the force is resurrecting, 'because they've run out of original ideas.' The idea is that Schmidt and Jenko - who, thanks to their youthful faces - will be sent undercover to a local high school, where they can try and bust a drug ring that's taking place there.
They report to their new workplace, on 21 Jump Street, before starting their first day at school. Schmidt and Jenko attempt to blend in and befriend the teenagers, in order to uncover the drug ring, but will they succeed?
21 Jump Street is based on the 1980's TV show of the same name, which starred Johnny Depp in his breakthrough role. He also has a cameo appearance in the film, reprising his character, Tom Hanson.
