The Condemned Review

Good
When a movie features superstar wrestlers in leading roles, usually it's a glaring signal to drop everything and run from the multiplex. The Condemned is an exception to that rule; it has more merit than all of the previous WWE films combined... but when we're talking about The Scorpion King and See No Evil, that's not saying much.

"Stone Cold" Steve Austin stars as Jack Conrad, an American on death row for murder in El Salvador. Without notice, he's flown to Papua New Guinea and dropped on a remote island along with nine other condemned prisoners. They're each wearing an explosive device on their ankles. If they tamper with it or pull the attached red tab, it will explode.

Boogeyman Review

Bad
I am sad to report that Boogeyman is not another biopic. It's not even clear whether this tame bit of horror shlock is about the Boogeyman or simply a Boogeyman. The film's credits list him as "the," but let's hope it's a mistake; I prefer to think that the Boogeyman would have better things to do than menace the closets of a barely-there rural town.

This Boogeyman's favorite victim is Tim (Barry Watson), and a childhood encounter leaves Tim's dad dead -- but Tim, somewhat inexplicably, still alive. Years later, Tim is living in "the city" (very similar to "a city") terrified of closets and the dark, though surprisingly at ease with an insufferable and oblivious girlfriend Jessica (Tory Mussett). When a family tragedy brings Tim home again, he must confront his frighteningly literal demons. He also gets to spend some quality time with childhood love Kate (Emily Deschanel).

Friday, February 4, 2005

If you're looking for a review of "Boogeyman" in your newspaper this morning, you're not going to find one -- in any newspaper anywhere. Opening in theaters nationwide today, the movie has been kept hidden from critics because, to be blunt, the studios think it's garbage and want to rake in as much money as they can before word gets out.

Of course, nobody will admit to this at Screen Gems, which is releasing "Boogeyman." But it's no coincidence that every movie Hollywood doesn't screen in advance -- either by not holding previews until the night before opening or not holding them at all -- is largely lambasted once critics and audiences have caught up with it.
