Top Gun actor Tom Skerritt is returning to the small screen in an episode of American drama series LAW + ORDER - despite confessing he never watches television.

The 70-year-old was enticed to take on the acting role in an episode of the legal programme following a break in which he concentrated on his writing.

During his self-imposed exile from acting, busy Skerritt has written four screenplays, a novelisation of two of those screenplays, and a play.

He says, "I don't watch much television, and I'm only peripherally aware of what's on television. There hasn't been much worth doing out there as an actor.

"But when I read a LAW + ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT script, I thought it was really challenging."
