Play It Again, Sam Review

Good
Woody Allen has made a scant few appearances in films he didn't also direct. This is one of the better ones, an adaptation of his stage play by director Herbert Ross, best known for teaming him for the first time with Diane Keaton, a watershed moment no matter how you cut it. The story's a bit silly: Allen is a nebbish film critic who's getting divorced. To help him back into the game, he envisions Humphrey Bogart to help him woo women (including his best friend's wife, Keaton). Naturally, scenes from various Bogie movies are re-enacted and perverted for the purpose of comedy.

Serpico Review

Excellent
Damn dirty cops! It's gonna take Frank Serpico to clean up this town!!!

Based on a true story of rampant corruption and internal affairs in New York City (where else?), Serpico stands as the consummate cop movie, right up there with The French Connection. But while The French Connection is a standard cops-and-robbers movie, Serpico is pretty much cops-and-cops, as Al Pacino's title character hunts out corruption inside the department even though it means all but signing his death warrant.

Annie Hall Review

Essential
The Woodman's finest hour, in this bittersweet love story between a die-hard New Yorker and a midwestern ditz, about what it really takes to make a relationship (or two or three) work. Woody Allen is at his best as an actor, and Diane Keaton has never had a better role. What makes Annie Hall so much fun, though, is the cameos -- from Paul Simon to Jeff Goldblum's one liner (On the phone: "I forgot my mantra!"), it's a complete send-up of the 70s. Best is Christopher Walken as Annie's psychotic brother.

Amityville 3-D Review

Bad
Yes folks, that's Meg Ryan in one of her first roles ever on film (and in three dimensions, no less), in the stellar 1983 crapfest, Amityville 3-D.

Surprisingly, Ryan proves that she's a real actress here. The rest of the cast (including Tony Roberts and Lori Laughlin) pretty much sleepwalk through this mess of a sequel, sidesteppin the terrible special effects, awful fright sequences (it's rated PG, for God's sake!), and pathetic use of stuff jutting into the camera to create that oh-so-popular 3-D effect. (3-D moments include a fly that gets in your face and a Frisbee flying toward the camera.)

A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy Review

Weak
The sole misfire in Woody Allen's third DVD box set (an otherwise impressive collection), A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy fails because it is almost completely removed from reality in every way. Sure, his usual themes of wanting, betrayal, loneliness, and sexual dysfunction are all explored at length, but putting

The acting is atrocious -- Mia Farrow sounds like she's reading from a cue card the entire film, and Mary Steenburgen and Julie Hagerty are woefully miscast as a troubled wife and a wanton nurse, respectively. Poor Tony Roberts spends the entire film with a rag wrapped around his head. Worst off, however, is José Ferrer, an aging star uncrated, dusted off, and carted in for the occasion. The poor guy does not belong in a Woody Allen vehicle, mangling what comedy there is.
