LATEST: British Prime Minister Tony Blair returned home from hospital on Friday night (01OCT04) after a procedure to cure his heart flutter was declared a success by doctors.

The grateful 51-year-old politician thanked the staff at London's Hammersmith Hospital and a spokesperson for the hospital confirmed the procedure "was successful" and specialists deem the threat of the problem returning to be "very low".

Blair spent Friday night at his official Downing Street residence, before leaving for his Chequers country retreat yesterday (02OCT04) where he is expected to spend the rest of the weekend.

The Prime Minister left for hospital at seven o'clock on Friday morning under tight security. Later that morning he was sedated for a routine catheter ablation procedure which took cardiologists two hours to complete.

By five o'clock the procedure was declared a success and Blair, wearing an open neck shirt with a plaster on one hand, left hospital with wife CHERIE.
