Veteran crooner Tony Bennett and R&B star John Legend were feted for their tireless efforts to improve the lives of children at a charity gala in New York on Tuesday (11Jun13).

Bennett was handed the Samsung Hope for Children Lifetime Ambassador Award for his work with Exploring the Arts, a nonprofit organisation founded by the singer and his wife, Susan Benedetto in 1999.

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton paid tribute to Bennett via video link while his daughter Chelsea presented the award at the 12th annual Hope For Children Gala, sponsored by electronics firm Samsung.

Legend was handed the Samsung Hope for Children Ambassador Award for his work with the Show Me Campaign, which fights for educational reform in the U.S.

The star-studded audience was treated to performances from Matchbox Twenty, Robin Thicke and Estelle at the event, which helped raise over $1.5 million (£967,774) for charity.
