Snow Dogs Review

Bad
When I first saw the trailer for Snow Dogs in front of Monsters, Inc., I couldn't believe what I was seeing or hearing. Cuba Gooding Jr. as a dentist in Miami who inherits a house and a team of sled dogs in Alaska, and chooses to move there and make the best of things. It's all kind of a blur, but then there were a lot of shots of him being cold; him being a city "slicker" in the wilderness; and him screaming because he's either slipping, falling, being dragged, or being chased by some kind of animal. All the while, "Who Let the Dogs Out" plays over his screams.

I thought, "Man, how surreally bad." Comedian David Cross has a joke about how he keeps a list of great money making ideas he came up with while stoned. A kid's sled dog movie about a black dentist from Miami has to be one of them.

Real Genius Review

Extraordinary
Ah, the '80s. It was the semi-golden decade of decadence and self-importance. It was the last time when what the average Joe likes determined what the movie studios made, not the other way around. Consequently, it was the last decade for really funny movies. In the 90s, if you wanted to make something side-splitting, you had to go Independent.

In the '80s, however, there are no shortage of movies that are just plain fun. From the Ghostbusters films to Ferris Bueller's Day Off, to the off-kilter dark comedy/horror April Fools Day, the 80s had no shortage of movies that made you laugh. It was the only time that comedies had scripts instead of actors that make up their own scripts, and, as a consequence, the movies of the '80s were actually funny.

Cool Runnings Review

Good
Remember the second miracle on ice, the Jamaican bobsled team? Well after the international joke wore off (I seem to remember seeing a t-shirt or two during college) there was the movie Cool Runnings, which dramatizes the tumultuous road to the Olympics (which did everything in its power to keep the team out) and their thrilling last place finish. Of course, this isn't a movie about winning. It's about winning not being everything; it's almost the anti-sports movie. While the film is cute and charming, it isn't without its copious cliches. All in all, it's pretty much as expected.

Child's Play Review

Very Good
Unabashedly, this is a bad horror film. But it succeeds in its badness, and it's actually quite watchable, and funny. Stolen wholesale from an episode of The Twilight Zone, Child's Play spawned a franchise that, 10 years later, is still going strong. Oy.
