Fire officials shut down a concert by Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers in Los Angeles on Saturday (08Jun13) due to overcrowding.
The American Girl hitmakers were nearly 90 minutes into their set at the Fonda Theatre when the local fire marshal warned Petty the audience had ballooned to nearly 100 people over capacity.
The 62 year old jokingly asked if there were any volunteers willing to leave the show, but when no one obliged the law officer ordered the group to leave the stage following an extended version of Melinda. Petty told the crowd, "We're being told we have to go."
Furious concertgoers began howling at the fire marshal for shutting down the gig, but keyboardist Benmont Tench later took to Twitter.com to apologise to fans, writing, "So sorry y'all we were as surprised & bummed (upset) as you were."
The rock band is due to host another show at the same venue on Sunday night (09Jun13).
