Former Cap Cities/ABC President and CEO Dan Burke died Wednesday in Rye, NY at age 82. He, along with Chairman Tom Murphy, headed the company at the time it was acquired by the Walt Disney Company in 1986. His management style was to recruit talented executives and encourage independent enterprise and originality, a style that was in sharp contrast to Michael Eisner's, who was often accused of micromanaging the company. One of those he groomed for success is the current Disney chief Robert Iger, who in a statement on Wednesday, described Burke as "a gifted executive and natural teacher, and a man with a strong sense of right and wrong." He was the father of Steve Burke, who now heads NBC Universal (and who reportedly clashed with Eisner frequently following the Disney takeover).
