Activist and rocker Tom Morello is hoping to Occupy Austin, Texas on Friday (16Mar12) and start a new movement at the South by Southwest music and arts festival.
The Rage Against The MAChine star has been one of the most fervent celebrity supporters of the waning Occupy movement, which began in New York last autumn (11) and he's hoping to give activists a boost and a place to be when he hosts a showcase at the Swan Dive in Austin.
He tells Rolling Stone, "Sxsw has a lot of speciality shows - record companies, vodka companies, promoters and things like that. I thought it was important that at a music gathering of that size, to have a place where the rebels, revolutionaries, rockers, rappers and the 99 per cent could gather and have a mighty Sxsw throw down."
He approached the leaders of the Occupy Austin organisation weeks ago and asked them if they'd be interested in helping him stage a protest.
Morello adds, "I basically said, 'What do y'all want to do, how can I best serve?' and so they made a wish list of things and I was able to say yes to, ironically, about 99 per cent of them.
"Their intention is to have this flash mob dance party that's going to arrive at the venue. Due to the fact that it's an official Sxsw show, a lot of the space inside is reserved for badge holders, but there will certainly be a healthy Occupy presence in the venue, and also a contingent outside the venue. I promise you, they will all be served musically."
