Two adaptations lead the way on the 2013 Tony Awards nomination list, with the re-make of the 2005 British film Kinky Boots and the stage version of Roald Dahl’s children’s tale Matilda topping the amount of nods, with 13 and 12 respectively.

Among the notable names of the nominees are actor Tom Hanks, who is up for his first ever Tony award, for his Broadway debut in Nora Ephron’s Lucky Guy. Tim Minchin is one of the dozen Matilda nominees meanwhile, with the musician and comedian’s score up for a prize. For Hanks, he’ll be going up against the British actor Tom Sturridge, who starred in the revival of Lyle Kessler’s 1983 play Orphans. Kinky Boots stars Billy Porter, who plays drag queen Lola, and Stark Sands, who portrays factory manager Charlie Price, are up against each other in the leading actor in a musical category.

Kinky Boots amount of nominations is undoubtedly impressive, though it does fall two short of equaling the record set by The Producers, which collected 15 back in 2001. It does equal the amount that Billy Elliott was nominated for back in 2009 however. Behind the major two came Pippin, with 10 nominations, with Rodger’s & Hammerstein’s Cinderella following behind on 9 and Golden Boy on 8.
