The Krays Review

OK
The Brits love their gangster movies, especially when they're about, er, Brits. Here we have a tale of twin brothers in the 1930s who, thanks to early traumas, ended up turning from upstanding youths into die-hard racketeers. This is their story (from childhood to incarceration), dutifully (and rather artlessly) chronicled on film. Not much to see here, move along.

The Last Minute Review

OK
At first blush, Stephen Norrington's (Blade) is the kind of hip nouveau Trainspotting, about a hot young actor who quickly washes out and becomes another sad victim of the UK underworld.

Starring Max Beesley (known almost exclusively for being Mariah Carey's co-star in Glitter) as our ennuied beefcake, Norrington paints a portrait of time running out and life slipping away. Beesley's Billy Byrne jumps from encounters with electronica fetish clubs to jazz-standard-lip-synching hit men, ending up in the arms with one of the least enchanting ingenue I've seen in a long while. Played by Emily Corrie, it's not really her fault -- the lovely lass is stuck under a knit cap that makes her look like a common street urchin.

Preaching To The Perverted Review

OK
When you wrap your DVD in a faux vinyl S&M mask, you're making a statement. In the case of Preaching to the Perverted, that statement is, "Bondage is fun!"

This silly little comedy out of the UK offers a simple premise sent against a presumably scandalous backdrop: the world of fetish/S&M clubs. It's all fun and games until Johnny Law comes sniffing around, trying to figure out who's behind the clubs (which meet in secret) and how to prosecute them for, er, something. The government's priggishness seems to revolve around problems with shock treatment being practiced on the slave types. Solution: Hire a young "computer whiz" (in this film, that means a guy who knows how to use a chat room) to "infiltrate" the bondage world and gather evidence against them.

Feast Of July Review

Bad
When you see a lousy movie, it's usually fun to be able to mock it afterwards. This way, you at least get a little satisfaction from the otherwise complete waste of time and money.

Feast of July is a lousy movie, but it allows no such opportunity. From the first frame to the end, this film is nothing but sheer boredom, an Art Movie that wants to be oh-so-classy and ends up not even approaching a "feast," but rather becoming more fodder for the cinematic gristmill.
