Black artists are rallying against the idea that white, pop-driven entertainers have had the biggest influence over the hip hop, R&B and urban scene.
The BBC’s 1Xtra chart for black and urban music, the 1XtraPower List, turns out to be remarkably, embarrassingly white. The list of the “most influential artists” has been referred to as “the saddest list in history” after Ed Sheeran took the top spot, followed by Disclosure in second. The first Black artist to make the bizarre list was Tinie Tempah, followed by white, middle class singer Sam Smith (who grew up I a small town in East Herthfordshire) in fourth place. The list, which was allegedly compiled by “industry experts” continues in the same vein, with Katie B and Jessie J also making an appearance, the former in the Top 10.
Ed Sheeran topped the bizarre list.
The BBC told The Independent the list was chosen on the artists' 'quality of music' and 'impact across the wider industry', and was 'not about the colour of someone's skin'.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt may have gone home without any individual BAFTAs at last night's British Academy Film Awards but the Hollywood power couple have been two of the most talked-about attendees since the glittering ceremony. The actors turned up at the event in the matching attire of tuxedos and black ties and Angelina served as her fiance's touch-up stylist, tweaking his bowtie on the red carpet.
Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie Rocked Up In Matching Suits At The BAFTAs.
Whilst Brad kept his look polished and smart, Angelina opted to dress her look down with an open-necked shirt, loose silk tie and tousled hair. The Tomb Raider actress' choice to ditch a party frock in favour of a Saint Laurent blazer turned heads at the awards and made her the ceremony's style icon.
Tinie Tempah went for a royal high-five at the BAFTAs.
There's always that moment at the BAFTAs. That moment that just seems a little out of place. This year, that moment was entrusted to Tinie Tempah who was tasked with wandering down the aisles at London's Royal Albert Hall in a blue velvet smoking jacket, rapping and high fiving rigid looking celebrities.
Tinie Tempah Was In Action at the BAFTAs
The rapper was performing a duet with Mercury Prize nominee Laura Mvula, who was singing from the safety of one of the theatre boxes. Tinie on the other hand was down with the A-listers, wearing sunglasses, rapping. The 25-year-old appeared to be enjoying himself though - as did Emma Thompson - and when wandering across the front-row, he high-fived a rather embarrassed looking Prince William.
