OSCAR winner Timothy Hutton is publicly disobeying New York's new anti-smoking laws for fear of upsetting members of his exclusive gentleman's club.

The ORDINARY PEOPLE star is the incoming president of THE PLAYERS' CLUB, and he fears plans to ban smoking at the old-time organisation's regular Cigar Nights will make him terribly unpopular.

So he's ignoring tough new laws about smoking in public places - telling the authorities that the club's Cigar Nights will continue as usual.

The Player's Club was founded by the brother of John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Abraham Lincoln in 1865.
